Najmah Character Analysis
(MIP-1) When Najmah loses her family, her personality very much develops and changes. (SIP-A) When Najmah loses Baba-Jan and Nur, Najmah becomes much more mature and develops more realistic fears, rather than her silly and childish fears she had once had. (STEWE-1) Before Najmah lost her family, she was very afraid of leopards, although she knows they don't live where she is. “My heart hammers, and I want to run back to the house, but I know Mada-jan will be angry. I turn and run as fast as I can, all the way to the woodpile. There I spread my shawl on the ground and pile several different armloads of wood on top. I feel a tingling along my spine the whole time. I think I see yellow eyes gleaming in the dark to the side of the woodpile. I’m …show more content…
(STEWE-2) When the Taliban raid Najmah’s house it is the start of Najmah developing from a little kid to a more adult like role, and she realizes the harsh reality: the real monsters aren’t the ones hiding under the bed. “”No!' I shout, and Mada-jan holds me against her, keeping me from running after him. The bukri cries out in a bleating that sounds like a human baby, and I want to snatch her away from this human leopard," (17). When the author uses the term “human leopard” to describe the person who is taking away the goat, it is also a metaphor for the child in her being taken away as well, as she begins to fear the Taliban. This shows that she is now realizing that the Taliban are the equivalent to the leopard she has always feared, but in human form. This realization is the start of Najmah’s maturing to become more adult and helpful. (STEWE-3) Once the Taliban have taken away her brother and father, and the uncle comes to take the land from Najmah, it becomes all too clear that Najmah had spent her time fearing childish fears, not realizing the true dangers. This showed that she had been immature and …show more content…
(STEWE-1) After Mada-Jan and Habib died, she didn't care if she died, everything she had once lived for was gone. “I do not run or try to hide. I don't care if the Taliban find and kill me” (83). Najmah was in a state of pure shock and had an extremely hard time realizing that they had actually died. She lost her motivation to continue on with her life, which left her numb and emotionless, and the shock had eliminated her ability to take care of herself. Najmah had been doing really well, she was working for her family and showing that she could be relied on, as well as take care of herself independently. But now, she has developed from a mature person into someone who is numb and helpless. (STEWE-2) Najmah is also showing that she is being majorly affected by the flashbacks that she is experiencing after her family's deaths. “I am afraid if I close my eyes I'll see my mother's outstretched arm and the blood spreading around her and Habib's perfect small body, both of them covered with dust"

(SIP 1)Her focus on finding the remainder of her family takes her out of shock. (STEWE 1)When traveling through the mountain, a plan was forming in her head to go to Peshawar to find her family. “Without realizing it, the entire time we've been on the way from Kunduz to the Pakistani border, a plan has been forming in my head. I am barely able to keep from jumping up and running off into the night” (Staples 131). While she was traveling, the thought of finding her family brought her back and out of the shock. (SIP 2)Loss also drives her through the mountain after the loss of Mada Jan and Habib. (STEWE 1)While Najmah was traveling through the mountain, her number one focus was to find Baba Jan and Nur since she had no one else. That was a big driving force for Najmah and it really inspired her to go over the mountains and to Peshawar. ”But It will be very sad without mother and Habib. But if I cannot find Baba Jan and Nur in Peshawar, I will wait for them in Kunduz, where I am prepared to fight for what belongs to my family. This plan fires in my heart” (Staples 151). This is the first sign we see of Najmah regaining hope and wanting to travel. It is all because loss is driving her to do this and she would do anything to find Baba Jan and Nur.(STEWE 2)Najmah makes the decision to put her life on the line to get to Peshawar and find them. She was dressed as a boy, and in that part of the world girls are very discriminated against and if she was found out to be a girl, the consequences would be unbearable. “The malek and the truck driver shout at each other some more, and I lower myself from the branch onto the canvas and drop to my stomach” (155). The reason she put her life in so much danger, is because her focus was on finding them. Not only was she dressed as a boy, but she was lying and ventured out while really being a…

Matar emphasise the fact that women are influential even in a patriarchal society by highlighting the theme of male which he incorporates within the patriarchy. He eradicates the allusion that women in Libya have no rights, “I cried because I understood that I was now the property of another man…” (Pg 173) this powerful quote chosen by Matar, portrays the pain and emotions experienced by real women in cases where arranged marriages occur. However he also shows how Suleiman didn’t understand his role in the society, when he uses the character of Suleiman to say “We are...two open pages of the same book”, this gives us the meaning of equalisation, between man and women, which as Matar knows in the time of 1979 in Libya women were never equal to man.…

The characters in this novel have all shared a tragic tale with each of them sacrificing something for the better. For example, after Mariam is sentenced to death for killing Rasheed , in her final moments “Mariam wished for so much … Yet as she closed her eyes, it was not regret any longer but a sensation of abundant peace that washed over her. She thought of her entry into this world, the harami child of a lowly villager, an unintended thing, a pitiable, regrettable accident. A weed. And yet she was leaving the world as a women who had loved and been loved back. She was leaving it as a friend, a guardian, A mother” (329). This quote is important because all Mariams life she felt like she was not worth anything. But what was tragic was the fact that she loved this family so much she was willing to sacrifice her own life, happiness, and a chance to love again. Mariams realization before her death was sad, because the fact that she was about to face her end and the only thing she could think of was how one family made her believe that she was a person and deserved happiness and love. Additionally, when Mariam was at the hospital with laila, and laila was giving birth to her son zalmai, she didn’t scream once …”Mariam saw now the sacrifices a mother made. Decency was but one. She thought ruefully of nana, of the sacrifices that she to had made. Nana, who could have given her away, or tossed her in a ditch somewhere and run. But she hadn’t. Instead, nana had endured the shame of being a harami, had shaped her life around the thankless task of raising Mariam and, in her own, loving her” (256). This quote was meaningful because Mariam never really understood why nana did some of the things she did. she always questioned if nana really loved her, and if the things she did was in Mariams best interest. But here at this moment she realizes that nana did love her , and everything she did was for Mariam. Unlike jalil who wouldn’t claim Mariam as…

One of Marjane’s major behavioural changes are when she allows a broken relationship to put her self-esteem and self-worth down, causing her to go into depression due to having no support. The quote, “I spent more than two months on the street in the middle of winter…until I spit blood and ended up…” (Satrapi 2.86), shows the extent to which she hurt herself on account of depression. Depression also leads her to attempt committing suicide. Fortunately, she survives and looks on it as an act of god, so she decides to get a hold of her life. This is illustrated by the quote, “I inferred from this that I was not made to die. From now on, I am taking myself in hand” (2.119). Another sign of behavioural change is when Marjane grows into an adult in Austria. With this, she decides to update her look to assimilate with the population. With these changes, she is making herself different from her own culture which presents problems for Marjane upon return to Tehran. This highlighted by the quote, “The harder I tried to assimilate, the more I had feeling that I was distancing myself from my culture, betraying my parents and my origins”…
