Nacho Duato's Remanso
Remanso is a trio for three men, Vladimir Malakhov, Parrish Maynard and Keith Roberts. It is choreography by Nacho Duato, music by Enrique Granados (“Valses Poeticos” for piano) and set, costumes and lighting design by Nacho Duato. Without any background, the audiences pay more attention on their performance and emotion, and try to imagine theirs’ relationship and what the story is about. The only board with the color change by lighting seems to show different mood of the character. Three dancers dance so powerful. Without background information, they “tell the story” by movements and emotions. It is so difficult to do that, but they did.

In Aszure Barton, the performers beautifully conveyed stories through music, lighting, costumes, props, scenery, and most importantly, dance. “‘Tarantella’ from August Bournonville’s Napoli”, “Consumed”, and “Closer to Closure” particular stuck out during the duration of the concert. It also helped the audience make sense of the setting because the transitions from scene to scene was quick and there was no background design. The lighting took my experience to a whole new level because it helped bring out all the characters and the settings. This play's setting was all dependent on the lighting because they used the lighting to establish the different settings and I think they were successful. It was the strongest statement in the production because not only did it help us, the audience but also the actors on stage to understand where the barriers were between different the rooms and helped make it look like an enclosed area.…

These are visually presented depersonalised and simple, allowing theatrical flexibility. The interplay of dialogue, music, sound effects and projected images work together to create wartime setting and an extra emotional dimension to the play. The audience’s proximity to the stage enhances the intimacy created by the bareness of the stage and the re-connection of the two main characters: Bridie an Australian Army Nurse & Sheila a British Civilian.…

Nacho Duato uses great elements of space in his different techniques in the performance. The areas of the stage that the dancers inhabit show that they stay of their farm and never leave the enclosed garden to see what’s on the other side of the fence. This shows the cyclic lifestyle of the working class, Catalonian people who live off the land.…

Figure 2 is a frame from Oldboy that evokes the clear message of ‘insanity’, shown by the expression on the characters face along with the deranged almost primitive hair. Additionally, the lighting that is used allows the scene to have a more dramatic uneasiness about it yet draws the audience in, because of the offset of the lamp and the shadows that are cast along the back wall as the light source is within the frame; this creates an increase in depth. Here Chan-Wook uses a backlight to make the wall appear and add additional texture to the scene to contrast against the subject so that his shadows won’t get lost in the darkness. The additional soft key light that is not included in the frame is used to light the subject’s face and particularly his crazed expression. Chan-Wook has mixed colour temperatures to show the confusion within the frame because the key light is not the same type of light as the backlight.…

One day while I was dancing to a record in my living room, my mother’s friend who was a Spanish dancer noticed me and encouraged me to start taking dance lessons. So I began taking lessons from a prestigious dancer, Paco Casino who was related to Rita Hayworth. Before I knew it, dancing was changing my life in a blink of an eye and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. As I was turning nine, my phase as a Spanish dancer soon took a shift to staring in dramatic radio shows.…

As the performance commences, an immense yellow sun captures the audience, whilst the rest of the stage remains unlit, revealing the silhouettes of the still dancers, together in the formation of a V shape. As the performance gradually unravels, the dancers rapidly shoot up directly into space, standing with straight arms reaching above their heads, whilst dust is thrown and released into the air. The bodies begin to move in a dramatic however sudden and sharp manner across the stage. They have separated into two groups dancing in opposition and are somewhat symmetrical to each other. Assembled again, the dancers perform direct and strong hand and arm gestures to assist them across the stage, whilst the continuity of what sounds like a ‘pulsating heartbeat’ flows in the background. The movement becomes in more intensity, angular and linear suggesting that this is a dramatic, contemporary/lyrical styled piece. We can potentially recognise a few of Laban’s effort actions throughout the performance, as there are several slashing, gliding and thrusting body…
