Myths In Ancient Greek Culture

Mythology has been a very important part of Greek culture for many decades. Most myths date back about 2,700 year to the time where writers such as Hesiod and Homer lived. A myth is described as “an idea or story that is believed by many people but that is not true”. For the people living in Greece back in the 8th century, they didn’t so much believe in these stories as myths, but more of a religion. Although all of the gods of their religion were very important, each in their own individual way, there are some that are more popular than other. For example, most people have heard of Artemis and Apollo, but how about their mother, Leto? Many people only have heard of their names, but in reality there is much more to them. Zeus, the god of thunder was married to the goddess of marriage, Hera. When Leto, a Titan goddess, seduced Zeus and he got her pregnant with twins, Hera was angry. She was so upset, that she called a curse upon Leto. The curse that fell upon Leto

Among the Olympians include the twin’s uncle, Poseidon, aunt Demeter, and many half siblings, which include Ares, Hermes, Hephaestus, Dionysus, Aphrodite, Athena, and their “step mom” Hera. Artemis was the goddess of many things. She is most known for being the “goddess of the hunt”. While she is the goddess of the hunt, she is also the goddess of chastity, virginity, the moon, and the environment. As goddess of the environment it was her job to protect any animal in her sight.
