Myth Of Medea
Jason was the son of a king in an area called Iolkos. Jason’s uncle Pelias killed Jason’s father and took the throne for himself. Jason’s mother takes him to Chiron, the centaur, and raises him on the Mountain of Pelion. When he turns twenty, Jason goes to visit the palace at Iolkos. Along the way, Hera, the queen of the gods, meets Jason disguised as an old woman and asks him to aid her across the river. He assists her and loses his sandal. When Jason arrives at the palace, demanding his throne returned, his uncle Pelias begins to worry, as an oracle had shortly before foreseen that a stranger with one sandal would appear and take his kingdom from him. Pelias then tells Jason that if he succeeds in bringing the Golden Fleece, hidden in a land …show more content…
The first task was to till the earth with the fire-breathing bulls that the god Ares had gifted Aeetes. Medea, a powerful sorceress, gave Jason an ointment to make him immune to fire and iron for a day. The second task was to sow the teeth the King gave Jason. But Medea knew that the teeth would grow into skeleton soldiers, so she instructed Jason to throw a stone into their midst, which would cause them to attack each other. The final task was to kill the dragon guarding the Fleece. Medea supplied Jason with a potion to make the Dragon fall into a deep sleep. Jason finally gets the Fleece, but King Aeetes chases after him and attempts to kill him. Medea cuts her brother into pieces to distract him while she and the Argonauts make their escape. Jason marries Medea after he becomes king again, although, the people are uncomfortable with their new Queen and banish them. Jason and Medea move to Corinth, where the King offers his daughters hand in marriage. When he marries the princess, he breaks the vow he made to the gods and is cursed. Medea kills the woman, kills Jason’s children, and leaves to Mount Olympus, where she marries Achilles. Jason goes back to Iolkos to see the Argo on display. The original myth as told by Apollonius bears some difference to the on screen adaptation as well as similarities. In the myth Medea is present with Jason and as they come upon the serpent and it is Medea who calms the beast to allow Jason to retrieve the Golden Fleece “her charged drug in its eyes, and their most potent odour enveloped it and laid it unconscious” (Apollonius, Argonautica lines 158-159). She prays to Sleep and uses salves to render the beast unable. Once the serpent is out of the way they take the Fleece and leave the grove as Jason urges Medea onward.…

    Medea's Revenge Analysis

Her multitude of steps toward revenge shows just how elaborate and demented her plans are. Medea first starts with convincing King Creon to let her and her children stay one more day in order to prepare for exile. Medea never intended to use this day to prepare, for she used it to plan her revenge. Medea devised a plan to kill Creon’s daughter in order to make Jason suffer. Creon’s daughter is Jason’s new love interest, and her untimely death would leave Jason heartbroken. Medea also conceived a new procedure that involved the death of her own two children. She would kill her children in order to make Jason suffer and leave him with unimaginable grief. Medea needed to come up with a way to kill the princess without actually directly committing the act. She decides to use poisoned gifts that the princess could not refuse. Medea also undertook an escape plan in which she would flee to another city, and was promised to be safe there. She strikes this deal with Aegeus of Athens who promised Medea safety in his city in exchange for her to work her magic to help him with fertility issues. Medea must then commit the acts, and does so by sending in the poisoned gifts with her two children as a peace offering. The gifts not only kill the princess, but kill King Creon as well. She then kills her own children, and must plan a way to escape to Athens. Medea does this by flying away in a chariot pulled by dragons. These…

Jason has no claim to the quest’s laud and honor that are due only to its leader; the only glory he finds is the glory that a careless craftsman, or goddess, grants her tools-ignoble death beneath the bow of the Argo. The goddess is kind enough to deliver him from danger when it suits her purposes, but nothing beyond. By showing mortals as puppets on the strings of divine puppeteers, Euripides makes it clear to the Greeks that their submission is a form of acquiescent abuse. Additionally, with the gods, justice does not exist. After murdering her sons, Medea appears “in a magic chariot, give [her] by the Sun,” after perpetrating a crime “most loathsome … to the gods … and all mankind” (69). For her murders, Medea is doomed to eternal misery in the Fields of Punishment, a doom that mortal justice would hasten. However, in granting Medea his chariot, Helios, the Sun, speeds her flight from this justice, prolonging her mortal existence, and thereby granting her many happy years to which she is not entitled. By aiding Medea, Helios is an accomplice to the act of murder, and warrants the same doom as she. No death, however, awaits him, and so, Helios cannot be constrained to his rightful…

Jason was the son of the lawful king of Iolcus, but his uncle Pelias had usurped the throne. Pelias lived in constant fear of losing what he had taken so unjustly. He kept Jason's father a prisoner and would certainly have murdered Jason at birth. But Jason's mother deceived Pelias by mourning as if Jason had died. Meanwhile the infant was bundled off to the wilderness cave of Chiron the Centaur. Chiron tutored Jason in the lore of plants, the hunt and the civilized arts. When he had come of age, Jason set out like a proper hero to claim his rightful throne.…
