My shoes
On my 18th birthdays, I went to the mall with my friend Angela. I chose this item because they were from one of my closest friend, we went through a lot to get them and when I finally got them, after a while I didn’t like them as much anymore. She wanted to get me a birthday present but she didn’t want it to be a surprise and she wanted to make sure that whatever she got for me was what I wanted. We spent the whole day, from store to store looking for the perfect gift. I wasn’t sure of what I wanted. I didn’t know if I wanted a pair of shoes, a party dress, jewelry, or food. I was very indecisive and reluctant about the stuff we found.
We went to almost every store in the mall but nothing seems to catch my eye or there was something wrong with what I wanted. When I saw any dress that I wanted it was too big or too small, too long or too short, too bright or too dull or it was too expensive or too cheap to be a birthday present. I am very selective when it comes to my jewelry so it wasn’t going to go anywhere if we focused too hard on it. We were planning to go out to eat with my family and friends and my dad was paying so she could not give me that as a present. So the only thing left were shoes which we didn’t find at the mall but on our way back home we saw this store called Guissini close to my house and decided to stop there. They had a lot of pretty shoes that where in style that year especially wedges. We saw these adorable little black wegdes and they where the perfect size and price and we both liked them. Also I could were it during the spring and summer, so it was a two for one deal. So she bought it and handed it over to me.

I was extremely happy about the wedges; I wore it at least ones a week during the spring and summer. Everyone at school always complimented my shoes and made me feel special. Just because these shoes were a birthday present from my close friend made it even special. But one day I wore the shoes to school in the

When I turned fourteen, I had a long talk with my parents about my big day only being a year away and how we needed to start with all of the preparations. The first thing I look for was my dress. In my vision, it was the most beautiful, shiny, and spongy dress. I wanted to be a princess for a day. One day after school my older sister, Carolina, had a magazine with prom dresses in it. Since she was a senior, she was on the looking for a dress too. As we saw the magazine, we found a lot of pretty dresses and told my mom to take us shopping, so that Carolina could try some on. As we arrived to the store "Glitz and Glamour", we found out they sold quinceañera dresses as well. My mom asked the employee to bring us some quinceañera dress magazines, while Caro and I watched the magazines for prom dresses. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a beautiful, green, shiny dress. It was perfect. As soon as I saw it, I said, "Mom, I want this dress for my quinceañera." We told the lady that I wanted the dress and she explained that it was available in pink and green. Since I had fallen in love with the color, I told my mom I wanted it in green, but since the tradition is pink, it was obvious that my mom was going to say no. I disagreed with my mom and ordered it green. The lady told us that my dress would arrive in four days. I was…

and I bought her a very expensive mother’s ring with all her kids birthstones and when she first got it she loved it, but once the excitement wore off and the holiday spirit left, she removed the ring and placed it on a shelf when it still sit today, years later. Another Christmas I paid for me and my mom to take an art class together for fun because we both like art a lot and that experience and one on one time is still appreciated today and the fun time we had is still talked about even though it is a few years later. These are the experiences that helped shape my opinion about non-material…

They had incredible support and impeccable cushioning. I wore them when my family and I would go out to get nourishments, to go out to freelance, and in school. When they would become a little scuffed or unsanitary, I would take a rag and scour them off thoroughly to make them appear to be fresh out of the box. But one day, I made a bad decision. I wore them to the baseball fields on a somber day. Towards the back of the park is the fields that the older kids played games on. I saw my friends being sedentary in one of the pavilions. I rode over to them on my bike and sat down next to one of them on the old, brown bench. We were listening to music and talking about arbitrary things until one of them said that we should go in the pond. It was about 7:30 P.M. and it was getting dark out. The sun was setting on the horizon as he stepped into the brown, murky water that the ducks swam in. There is also turtles in that pond, but we did not know that back then. He hollered back at us, “Y'all got to do it too now!” Without hesitation, my friend and I hopped off the bench and walked into the water. It was frigid to start out, but after about two minutes it became warmer. With goosebumps down my arms, I had fun throwing a football back and forth in the water with them. I had to go because it was getting late and as soon as I stepped out it hit me. I had left my shoes on. I looked down and I saw my shoes go from…

Slowly the questions faded from my mind, and I tried to make peace with my current situation. I started reminiscing. My memories shuffled in my head… and boom, it was the week of Jess’s first prom. I remember it so vividly. Jess was on cloud nine. Everything was so perfect. A star athlete, Honor Roll student, great leader, vice president of her class, and she even had college recruits looking at her. The most astonishing part of it all was she was only sixteen and a sophomore in high school. She bought the perfect prom dress. It was so elegant- strapless, blush pink gown with silver sequence along the bust. All her appointments were made. Hair, nails, and even against her prior morals, a…

She presented me a bunch of supplies that the foundation gave me for college. I was so surprised when I saw a full of car of items such as a laptop computer, toiletries, and other necessary things for college that I did not think to bring. I felt so grateful to have a person to take their time to pick out every little thing for me, especially since we both don’t like shopping. I didn’t expect so much and was in total shock. I was glad to have her there on such a nerve wracking day. She definitely expressed more excitement than I did. I was so nervous, full of anxiety, and didn’t even want to be there. The thought of being a college student scared me. I felt the excitement she gave off, which helped me relieve the stress I had on that day. That was only one of the many experiences I had with…

The ride home was silent, and I was so afraid to ask what was in the bag. Once we got home, my mom opened the bag, and it was love at first sight. My friends, fellow patients, and nurses complimented me on the dress.…

This past year, I was walking with my boyfriend in the mall and we happened to go into a jewelry store. We were just looking around and I spotted a beautiful diamond ring. He came over a looked at it and said it was pretty. Well Christmas came and I was wondering if he got it for me. I opened all my presents from him and they were all great except I didn’t get my ring. Well we went to eat and go see a movie, and when he brought me back home I went upstairs to my room and there was a little box lying on my pillow. I opened it up and it was my diamond ring I wanted. I was reaching for my phone to call him and when I turned around he was standing right there. I was so happy! I think a diamond ring is a lot like me for three reasons:…

It all began with shopping. First with my girlfriends over the years, goofing off on trips to the mall trying on gorgeous flowing gowns for fun, and then it was finally time for me to buy one, finally a formal occasion where I got to dress up in a fancy gown with high heels, my Mom took me to the mall. Even though it wasn’t quite prom, it was still a formal dance, a celebration of completing middle school and entering into high school. While I shopped with my Mom I could sense her excitement for me. It was exciting and special for her to see her little girl growing up. We shopped and shopped, I must’ve tried on a hundred dresses until I found the perfect one. It was pink with tiny embroidered flowers all over. I completed my look with strappy silver heels, silver jewelry and a hand bag.…

In middle school, I met a girl who I became great friends with. We were bestfriends for a long time. I noticed that when she came to school she came in poor clothing. Her shirts were ripped and she wore flip flops often even though it wasn’t summer anymore. When I came over to her house for the first time, it was a small house that was crammed with lots of things. There were only three bedrooms and they were all together the size of what one bedroom with more space and furniture was. When my shoes began to get too small, my mom would pack a bag for me to bring to my friend because her feet were always a size smaller than mine.…

Our plan was to drive through Nevada and into Utah. We stayed the night at the Beehive Inn. It was the only hotel close to us and there was only one room available because the Udells cancelled, so we were the Udells for the night. The room turned out to be a honeymoon room and it had only one bed a well , but this was more awkward than the night before. In the morning we started for Colorado Springs. Once we got there instead of buying a room we were able to stay at one of the sorority houses at Roger’s college. His friend Bronwyn let us stay there. There was a party at one of the other houses close by and so she let me borrow her clothes since I had nothing fancy. Her style was how mine once was: It was full of cute shirts, the ones that were super soft and cute. I hadn't dressed nice since “it” happened. The party was fun, but I had left early. The next morning my suitcase was already downstairs, but Bron left me one of her outfits to wear. We were on our way and there was a note with my suitcase she had taken most of my clothes and replaced them with hers. I was a bit mad, but later on I knew I would thank her. We headed towards Kansas…

My six year old self was wearing a pink velvet hello kitty long sleeve shirt and jeans that had embroidered sparkles and butterfly designs. Obviously I was dressed to impress. After visiting with my parents for a couple weeks I was about to spend my first night with my new family. My mom is a petite Asian women but despite her small frame she is exerts confidence and has a Type A personality while my dad is a big white guy who is kind and is perfect for my mom because he is Type B personality. Upon meeting them I knew they were perfect for me because I coincidentally looked like my mom and had her stuberness but had my dad's soft side. I already had the night planned in my head, I would go and play then eat a delicious dinner and then convince my parents to watch The Little Mermaid before I had to go to bed. When I got to my new home I rushed to play doctor with the chocolate labs who would soon become my best friends. I was later called to dinner and that's where my vision of the perfect first night crashed and burned. On my plate was a grotesque pile of salad taking up at least a third of my plate. This was not acceptable in my book. I proceeded to give every excuse to not eat The Salad.…

    My Shoeless-Ness Behavior

    • 289 Words

Walking around barefoot did not contradict or disrupt my presentation in a way which halted my ability to perform daily functions. I was not stopped, harassed, laughed at, or demeaned. Of course my behavior was impressed within pre-existing interactions and relationships within a community. I am a young, white, female college co-ed. I dress like I come from an upper-middle class family: and I do. The result is that the chances of my shoeless-ness being interpreted as a sign of poverty or vagrancy was next to nil. Given my identity and status, I would likely have been safe (but very uncomfortable) walking around the Rice campus naked.…

It was my birthday. I was presented many colourful and expensive gifts. But my best friend did not give me a gift like that. But it was not colourful, it was blue and white which were my favourite colours. It was not a normal scarf which was bought from the shop but it was made by my friend. She bought many balls of wool and learned how to knit. She tried her best to make a special gift for me. I knew that she had had much ado and time to finish kniting the scarf . Although it was not beautiful, I was happy and promise her treasure it. However, it was also the last gift from my best friend. Two months later, she had to move to another country with her family.
