In order to determine “the level and which specific aspects learners need to improve on” (Gravells, 2012, p.50), teachers should administer initial and diagnostic assessments to them before or at the start of a course or programme. The results of initial and diagnostic assessments can be used to help learners agree on Individual Learning Plans specifically designed to meet their learning needs. Some learners might have expectations of making rapid progress within a course or programme but unexpectedly experience difficulties due to a lack of personal or functional skills. Initial and diagnostic assessments should help teachers identify problems early relating to their learners’ personal skills. In certain circumstances, results from initial and diagnostic assessment might indicate that some learners do not have the requisite skills to have any realistic chance of progressing within a course or programme and they should be referred to a course or programme which more specifically meets their learning needs. On the other hand, some learners might have very advanced personal skills or abilities in relation to the minimum core and teachers should be able to ascertain which of their learners would need to feel more challenged during the programme and plan different activities to meet the needs of these learners. Results from initial and diagnostic assessments should be used by teachers to discuss and agree realistic targets with their learners early in the course or programme.…

The role of initial assessment assists in the process of determining suitability of learners for a certain subject. It also assists me as a tutor in acquiring a learner’s prior knowledge of a subject. Initial assessment is used at the start of a qualification and will give me an understanding of the level that a learner is currently working at, and where they may need additional support. Part of our initial assessment process is to get the learner to complete a ‘persona skills diagnostic’ which will allow me to look at the learners’ strengths and weaknesses. Initial and diagnostic assessment will help to form the basics of where a learner should begin their programme of learning. Following initial assessment, I will begin the process of diagnostic testing which will highlight any key areas that a learner may require extra support. Once the needs of a learner have been identified, I can then work with learners on an individual basis to start to agree and set learning goals and targets. It’s important to remember that initial and diagnostic assessments form part of the application for learning. Continual assessment should take place throughout the duration of the learning experience. Once I have considered the results from the initial and diagnostic assessments I will be able to work with my learner to develop individual learning goals and targets and I will be able to focus particularly on the areas of development. To conduct initial and diagnostic assessments the company I work for use Maths and English testing, questionnaires and self-assessments. I will also use observation and oral questioning as part of the initial assessment.…

According to The Excellence Gateway (accessed 12/7/14) “initial assessment and diagnostic assessment is needed for each learner in order to find a starting point, or baseline for learning. It makes possible development of the learning plan”. Initial assessment and diagnostic tools can serve two purposes, firstly to assess potential students’ academic ability in relation to national standards. This will then dictate support required for targets and progression. Secondly initial and diagnostic assessments can be used for higher level qualifications where there are pre-requisites to ensure that the standard is up to the required level for that course. Organisations also need to ensure that they understand not only the student’s educational needs through in-depth diagnostic tests for literacy and numeracy skills levels but their social, emotional and behavioural needs as well through the initial assessments. In this way organisations can ensure that they understand how to support their students in their learning journey.…

My assessment also showed I need moderate improvement in decision-making. Assessing and decision making is an integral part of our jobs as nurses. Transitioning into leadership roles requires decisions to be made on an organizational level. These decisions can be challenging and at times involves conflict, however, competency in this area in vital to being an effective leader. According to the Macrothink Institute, there are key factors involved in the decision-making process of successful leaders (Al-Tarawneh, 2012). Every process should begin with “assessing the problem, planning, evaluating consequences, developing a course of action organizing, actuating and evaluating the outcome.” (Al-Tarawneh, 2012, p. 4). Although the assessment…

Every phase within this process outlined above have an individual role yet they are all interdependent with one another (Royal College of Nursing (RCN), 2009, section three). An assessment has to be carried out to show that learning is taking place. The initial assessment will show me the learner’s knowledge, skills and capability in the hairdressing industry. The easiest and most effective way to show their understanding is by demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the criteria that has been given. This can then help me and the learners to see if they have fully understood, and if not is should encourage the learner to ask questions. Sometimes a learner will need guidance to understand what exactly they have to learn, and if they are on track and how they can improve their skills/ techniques. For this to be effective it means that a thorough assessment will need to take place.…
