My Philosophy Of Teaching Literacy
Imagine sitting in a classroom filled with books that are developmentally appropriate, multiple genres, culturally diverse, and relevant to all students. In this classroom, the reading area contains multiple forms of seating for the students, one wall contains the word wall that was made with the help of the students, another wall has a poster reminding students of the different forms of reading that was created by the students, a big classroom library sorted by genres, and iPad’s available for students to listen to books being read aloud and to record their own reading. The writing area is located next to the reading area and contains different types of paper, pencils, writing prompts, a list of high-frequency words for the students to refer to, and examples of different types of texts (story, recipe, poem, book, postcard, letter, etc.). The most important part of this classroom is the teacher who shares a passion for reading and writing with all of her students. This is what my classroom will look like. …show more content…
I believe that literacy is the ability to identify, understand, create, express thoughts and feelings, and communicate using printed and written materials. I am able to use my definition of literacy to guide my instruction and meet the needs of all my students. It is also important that the teacher has an understanding that literacy learning applies to all subjects and is not limited to the subjects of reading and writing. When teaching literacy, teachers need to consider the learning environment, the student’s interests and academic needs, student choice, the role of the teacher and student, and the balanced literacy
