My Next-Door Neighbor
My Next – door Neighbor

Mavis has been my neighbor for six years. I first met her when she knocked on my door and asked for a spade because she hadn’t yet unpacked hers. She had only moved in two days before.

Physically, Mavis looks younger than the most other women in their late sixties. She is of average height, neither fat nor thin. Her plump round face is framed by a mass of wavy white hair and her sparkling blue eyes show her humor and friendliness.

As for her personality, Mavis’s most striking characteristic is her generosity. My house, as well as most of our neighbors’, nearly always has a vase of flowers from her garden in the living room. Mavis is very good – natured and always has time for a chat. She is also patient. She hardly ever gets annoyed about something, except when children pick her favorite roses and lilies. However, she tends to be quite stubborn – once she has made a decision, nothing can change her mind.

Mavis always seems to be busy doing something. She spends a lot of her time looking after her garden and often participates in local flower shows. When she is not in her garden she is usually off somewhere raising money for charity or another.

All in all, Mavis is the perfect next – door neighbor. Since the day she moved in, we have grown very close and I am very fond of her, even if I am woken up by the noise of her lawnmower early in the

Ma is the primary caretaker of everyone, but a few instances stand out more than others. Though Ma is sassy to her pregnant daughter, Rose of Sharon, she also comforts her at the Weedpatch government camp when Rose of Sharon is upset about Connie, the father of her growing child, leaving her. Ma takes Rose of Sharon to the dance at the camp and promises not to allow anyone to touch her so she can enjoy the music without having to dance. They end up enjoying the night by each others' side. Ma also comforts her other daughter, Ruthie, in an important scene where Ruthie gets in a fight with another girl and ends up bragging that her older brother, Tom Joad, is currently hiding and wanted by police. An example of Ma's compassion for Ruthie in this situation is when Ma warns Pa that Ruthie told about Tom hiding. Pa calls Ruthie a “little bitch” and Ma retorts, “No, she didn' know what she was a-doin'.” Ruthie knows that she should not have…

Mama is also not afraid to say it like it is, she doesn't sugar coat what needs to be said but goes about it nicely, for example, when Dee/ Wangero asks Mama for the quilts, Mama wastes no time in telling Dee that "I promised to give these quilts to Maggie, for when she marries John Thomas." (page 166). Dee gets upset at Mama's reply and storms out and leaves, but Mama isn't really phased much by it, she lets it roll off her shoulders and "asks Maggie to bring her a dip of snuff." then, "the two of them just sit there until it's time to go in and go to bed." (page 167). She's so easy going and I really admire…

Mrs Polkinghorne was the intriguing woman from social services that comes to my house every week. She is lean and strong, and her skin looks rough and hard. Her eyes are glassy and small, they don’t show much emotion. She drives a large blue wagonette that rattles like pots in the wind. You never quite know what to expect when Mrs Polkinghorne visits. She is a lonely old woman, she lives alone in her prehistoric cottage with only her two cats. She is never angry but doesn’t show many signs of happiness either. She never laughs but I have also never seen her cry. She reminds me of God. Slow to anger and kind. She is almost like God trapped in a human body, I am not sure why I get this impression though.…

Some neighbours may pass one another and a have a quick hi, chat, and some don’t bother with each other. Most properties in the UK have distinct physical boundaries, for example, borders, hedges, fences or walls, most people respect these boundaries. We have them as a protection from others around us, so we can sit or sunbathe without onlookers, if someone were to pop their head over our fence this would, to most, be seen as intrusion. Many people have a relationship with their neighbours, most of them keeping a distance, not becoming too friendly, maybe borrowing a power tool or signing for a parcel and dropping it round when they finish work. Willmott, 1986, said neighbours are expected to have a ‘general disposition towards friendliness’ while, at the same time, respecting others ‘need for privacy and reserve’. This suggest the general feeling towards how a neighbour should be is friendly when seen but to respect the privacy and need for space.…
