History has taught us multiple times that Jews have struggled for centuries; they have been persecuted, unjustly accused of not committed crimes, expelled from countries and killed. The hatred against them started since the foundation of the Christianity and the time of new discoveries and conquests has not been an exception. In fact when the first Jews moved to the Americas, prejudices and hostilities followed them from Europe. The only factor that made their existence accepted to a certain extent is their financial power and influence on the world economy. When the Dutch started colonizing the Americas Jews were already an integral an economically influential part of the Netherlands and its large corporations, which were devoting their attention to mercantile colonization. Once the Dutch obtained part of Brazil from the Portuguese and formed New Netherland on the eastern coast of North America Jews followed the settlers. They were certainly not welcomed warmly but they played an important economic role in both colonies. By then Jews have been for centuries investors of those same large corporations that were colonizing the Americas, therefore despite the innate disdain towards Jews, these were always enjoying different forms of privileges and protection.…

During Nazi Germany, the Nazis first priority was taking over the state and controlling and dealing with their political enemies. However during the years 1933-1945, policies against the Jews were introduced. In 1938, German Jewish children were prohibited from attending German schools. Additionally in 1942 all Jewish residents had to wear the Star of David which segregated the Jews from the Germans. The Nazis obsession with creating a biologically pure, Aryan society deliberately targeted Jewish children, and the Laws introduced had a severe impact on the lives of children. The segregation didn’t allow the young children to live their lives, which affected them physiologically growing up. They would grow up to believe that they were different from others and that they were a complete different species, and no longer German.…
Being Jewish anywhere in the world was hard in the 1930s and 40s. Almost all know about German jewish hardship, the systematic slaughter of millions of jews in death camps across Hitler’s empire, but what many do not understand is that anti-semitism was incredibly strong in the United States as well. However, in a time when almost none stood by their side, Franklin Delano Roosevelt seemed the only world leader who cared. However, his cabinet did not share his welcoming attitude, and attempted to sabotage him. Although Roosevelt demonstrated that he did care about saving the Jews, his administration perpetrated systematic denial of Jewish entry to the country. Because he did not do enough to investigate this until it was too late, he is…

The population in Poland was densely ⅔ of Jewish immigrants but also their standard of living was poor to nothing at all. As well as the mortality rate was at an all time high and the population of Germany decreased severely from the migration towards Israel/Palestine and other Jewish states, as well as the total deaths that occurred. In Germany, the equality of people remained strictly towards those who followed the communist pathway, and didn’t belong to a Jewish community. Even the younger children of Jewish communities suffered more than others because they couldn’t contribute as much work and the Nazi’s refused for them to grow up as a Jewish descendant.…
Due to anti-semitism, the lives of many Jews were lost in a genocide known as the “Holocaust”. Anti-semitism is often used to describe any sort of “...political, social, and economic agitation directed against Jews” (Funk & Wagnalls). It was spread through propaganda, the idea of a master race, and led to the Jews being a scapegoat for the Germans after World War I. The history of anti-semitism can be traced back to biblical times, perhaps even earlier than that; as stated in Maus I, there were “centuries of anti-semitism” before the rise of Hitler and the Nazis (Maus I 171. 6). Although anti-semitism can be found earlier than biblical times, it was mainly prevalent after the crucifixion of Jesus, when many…
World War II was a terrible time for the Jews. Close to six million Jews died over the course of the War in Europe. This meant America had the largest Jewish population in the world. After the events of World War II, Jews didn’t know where to turn to; the once great sanctions of Judaism were in need of guidence with no one to lead them except for the dominant reform judaism in the United States and eventually Israel with the more conservative view on Judaism. While rebuilding Judaism in post-World War II America was widely accepted by most Northern Americans, the South however did not accept Jews because of their determination to end Jim Crow laws. The South grew more anti-semitic as the Jewish community fought for equal rights for all. In…
In human culture throughout the centuries there have been a select few gifted souls that have graced this earth. Each one special in there own way and talented beyond what the world has ever seen before. In the book My Name is Asher Lev we encounter one of these incredible prodigies. Asher’s story is similar to many other talented individuals in that he is raised in circumstances that seem less than suitable for a budding talent. This is a typical problem for the gifted because they do not view the world the same as others who may be close to them view it. It is a monumentally different place to the gifted.…
