My first bike ride with my uncle was a disaster. I prepared to the fullest extent. Knee pads, helmet, elbow pads, the whole nine yards. I was ready. As I stepped out of house into the bright sunshine of midday I heard a voice. “You ready buddy?” I heard my uncle call. I nodded in response “Yes sir!” “Well let’s get to it then” he replied. He wheeled the cherry red bicycle from the side of the house into the empty driveway. “Hop on” he said. I did as I was told. I was a nervous wreck as I climbed onto the two wheeled wonder that stood before me. The leather from the seat was of course extremely hot from the heat of the sun and scorched my leg as I sat down. I guess my anxiety showed because my uncle said “Don’t worry bud. I got you.” The voice which was meant to be reassuring did nothing to calm me. “Well let’s start then. Go ahead peddle now.” I began to peddle on his command. The wind blowing on my face was alluring. I wanted to go faster. I sped up, while my uncle still followed behind. “Ok I’m going to let go now. Let go now. Don’t worry you’ll be fine” he said. I wasn’t really paying attention to him when he spoke. All I was focused on was enjoying the ride. Immediately after he let go however, the ride became terrifying. The bike that felt so secure before now began to wobble and shake underneath me. I attempted to adjust my weight in an effort to stabilize the bike which leads to more disaster. I fell down immediately luckily landing on grass instead of concrete. “Ah!” I screamed as I fell. The bike landed on top of me constructing my leg. My uncle immediately came running over to see if I was alright. “It’s alright. Its part of learning to ride a Derrick Donkor 2 bike” he said. Again this voice was meant to be comforting but, it didn’t help at all. My

“Finally the Nines were all resettled in their seats, each having wheeled a bicycle outside, where it would be waiting for its owner at the end of the day. Everyone always chuckled and made small jokes when the Nines rode home for the first time. ”Want me to show you how to ride?” older friends would call. “I know you’ve never been on a bike before!” But invariably the grinning Nines, who in technical violation of the rule had been practicing secretly for weeks, would mount and ride off in perfect balance, training wheels never touching the ground.” - Chapter 6, page 46…

I tested the waters of bicycle riding by dragging my feet along the bumpy asphalt, but gravity was working against me. The incline was not allowing me stop, so jumped off. I walked away with only some bumps and bruises. The riding of my bike was put on hold for some time. My fear had gotten the best of me. It was not until the next summer that I would venture out again on my bike.…

When I first started learning how to ride a motorcycle I was very scared. After a while, I started to get the hang of it, but before I could become good, I crashed it into a barbed wire fence. I can still remember that day perfectly. It was a sunny summer weekend right before school started. My brother and I were taking turns riding it. My dad was mowing the lawn and my mom was at work. When it was my turn to ride it, I was doing okay until the second lap. The end of the second lap is where everything went bad. I was in the grass on the side of a hill. I remember getting closer and closer to the fence. I slowed the motorcycle down and put it in neutral, but I was still getting closer to the fence. I should have used the brakes, but at that…

On January 16th 2011, I was with my two brothers, Kasey and Brandon, and my sister-in-law, Alina at Wintergreen on an exciting snowboarding trip. We got there around 9A.M. and got right on the slopes. I absolutely love snowboarding and would never give it up for anything. About 5P.M. that night, my brothers and I were in the terrain park going off jumps, grinding, doing tricks, all that good stuff. The weather was very cold, and the slopes were pretty icy, but hey, what could be the worst thing that can happen? Maybe it could be a fall right on my butt, or a crazy wipe-out that could have given everyone a good laugh. Unfortunately it was neither of those. My brothers and I were playing follow the leader, they decided to dodge this jump, little did I know it was the biggest jump on the terrain park. I was going full speed and went off the jump, and then it hit me. I fell right on my back, before I knew it I was in the hospital with a broken back. The pain was absolutely excruciating. I ended up breaking my L1, luckily I was still able to walk, but I had to take it easy.…

The day I crashed my car… okay I didn't actually crash it. But I don't think that I have ever been so petrified seeing a powder blue prius about to rear-end me. Little me, little 4”11’, 112 pounds Katie Long was about to start driving. I get lost at the mall, the mall. So as you can assume, my parents are shaking in their boots. While bike riding may feel like second nature to most of us now, it certainly didn’t start out that way. I still remember it as if it just happened yesterday; I was riding down my sidewalk on my Disney Princess bike, the summer breeze blowing through the giant gap where my two front teeth once resided, and the only thing keeping me from face planting into the cement were my two little pink training wheels. It wasn’t long before the other kids in my neighborhood joined in for a little friendly bike race, and as I hopelessly watched everyone else zoom past me on their “big kid”, two-wheeled bicycles, I realized that it was time to lose the training wheels. I was prepared; my parents had agreed to getting me a new bike – specifically one with no princess decals or handlebar tassels – and I had on all the elbow pads, knee pads, ankle pads, and whatever other protective padding my mom could fit on my body, I felt some-what like the little brother from A Christmas Story. I almost peed myself from excitement as my mom got behind my bike and pushed me forward into the brand new life as a badass biker. I was queen of the world for about 10 seconds until I ate dirt hard. But like the generations of kids before me, I didn’t give up. By the end of the day I had eaten enough dirt to fill an entire flower bed, but none of it mattered…

She of course saw them anyways and asked what happened. I said I fell from my climbing tree again. I wasn't lying about that part but when she saw my go-cart she asked what happened. Motorcycle Collision

I’ll never forget the first time I saw a motorcycle collision. I was walking home the night before finals week began. It was late and the walk to my dorm was relatively well-illuminated by the street lamps being swarmed by moths. In the distance I could hear the distinct whine of the motorcycle. As it came barreling down the hill towards the intersection I then heard music blaring from an oncoming car racing from an adjacent street. The collision happened in slow motion… glass and plastic everywhere. My subconscious took over as I sprinted to the lifeless biker’s aid. He wouldn’t move or respond. Another witness called 911 seemingly seconds before the ambulance showed up. This horrific event sparked my interest in a career as a Physician…

It seemed like it was a good day. They announced that my race and my dad’s race was starting soon. so we went to the starting corral. My sister was on the wood structure by the announcers and the finish line. My Dad’s race had just started and he was in first place the whole time. “Pete Kraemer in the front.” Soon, we lined up with our tires against the start gate. “Five, four, three, two, one, Go Go Go!” The announcer screeched. I pulled in front in the first two jumps… BAHM!!! I landed with my tire sideways and I flew off and got run over by bikes like I was part of the ramp. I felt something chalky in my mouth. a nasty taste shot through my mouth that I think was dirt. Soon after, their had been a throbbing pain in my side for days and it felt as if I was hit by a truck. “Are you ok,” I heard.…

It was a nice and sunny day, I was about five years old and my dad wanted to teach me how to ride a bike. I was very scared and really nervous. I got my first bike on Christmas, it was orange and black and the wheels had big spirals on them. At first they had training wheels because I was just getting started. It was pretty simple riding with training wheels because it was easier to balance and I didn’t feel like I was going to fall off of the bike.…
