Skrzynecki’s “Feliks Skrzynecki” effectively conveys the notion that an individual’s sense of ‘place’ and belonging is tied to their relationship with the physical environment. In the poem Feliks is portrayed as lacking a close connection to the Australian culture, it is instead his garden where he finds his sense of place, he “Loved his garden like an only child... swept its paths ten times around the world”. Skrzynecki has used a hyperbole to demonstrate how much time Feliks spends in his garden as well as how his garden shares his identity as he travels across the world. By characterising Feliks’ relationship with his garden as a family relationship through the simile ‘like an only child’ the poet effectively highlights how belonging to physical place can take on equal importance as familial relationships in finding our sense of place and belonging.…

William Street is a very colourful poem by Slessor. With the use of imagery and other literary techniques that help readers champion the environment, Slessor achieves a vivid description of the area. But when contrsasting content with purpose, it is up to the reader to judge what Slessor is trying to convey. Each stanza ends with, you find it displeasing, I find it lovely. This tells readers that it is up to them to make the judgement of whether it is ugly or lovely. In addition, this simply manages two types of opinions and reinforces it through repeat throughout the poem.…

By this time, my parents had quit their jobs working in a restaurant and had transitioned to another job. I spent a very large portion of my time living here, and despite us having the most unpleasant neighbours you can imagine, it was quite nice. By this time, I was old enough to go to town by myself with some friends, so after learning the way, I went with my friends. The whole setting of Aldershot depends a colossal amount, as some parts can be very clean, pleasant whilst others are quite the opposite, although I suppose you could say this about most towns. With Aldershot being a small town, there wasn't really much you could do there, so we took pleasure in the little things in life such as visiting the forest around the Wellington Statue and exploring just about every place we could think of. There weren't many options in terms of schools in my area, so this meant that many of my friends who lived near me also attended the same school as me so that meant that I would go to town quite frequently since my parents didn't need to drive me to their…
