My Family Heritage Essay
A major part of my life has been centered around my family. The many holiday get-togethers and birthday parties with homemade ice cream and chocolate cake bring back some of my earliest memories. The older I become, the more I realize I would like to share the feeling of community I felt when I was with family to the other people in my life. One way I was able to do this was through volunteering. Probably the earliest and most consistent way I have volunteered is by taking care of neighbors’ animals when they were away or unable to care for them themselves. It usually consisted of feeding bottle calves, gathering eggs, watering cows, and taking care of the inside cats and dogs. This allowed me to give back to my neighbors for the times

Volunteers find a sense of self worth, empathy, gratitude, and responsibility. Personally, helping the community and providing a service to the community allows for a boost in confidence. Our world is often corrupt and unjust, but by twisting balloons and face painting, I learned that regardless of age, the youth of today can make major impacts on society, one smile at a time, even if it is just for a slight…

I volunteer in my community whenever I get the opportunity. For example, I helped students get to school safely and I helped out around the school. I volunteered at the public library to help younger children. I now see it is hard work to get children focused and help them not make a big mess, but I enjoyed helping them in any way I can. Volunteering at the public library also taught me about patience. Not everything went exactly how I planned it out, but at the end it still worked out. My time at the library also taught me about effort.…

When I was younger, I participated in Girl Scouts where we volunteered in food pantries, senior centers, hospitals, animal shelters and charities for the less fortunate. We also participated in service projects such as making cards for veterans, making blankets for hospitals and the homeless, and made care packages for veterans and the hurricane victims. Volunteering is important to me because I had an aunt that unfortunately died of cancer and I feel that no one should have to go through the pain and suffering that she did.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

I was privileged enough to be a part of a program in my high school that encouraged participating in volunteer work for both the community and school. For the past 3 years of my high school career, I was able to volunteer at neighborhood events hosted by a recreational center to a larger scale event like the Little Feet Meet hosted by Old Dominion University, where a Special Olympics is organized for elementary students across Norfolk who have mental and physical disabilities. By volunteering to these type of events, I realized that one of the fundamental aspects of being a good citizen is helping provide an environment in which everyone can feel free and…
