My Ear infection
My body temperature was rising up, I felt claustrophobic being trapped inside a plane on the way back home. My sore throat must have been infected for me to get a fever at that moment. I think almost everyone could hear me coughing from my seat so I tried to cough as softly as possible. I took a fever pill and went to sleep. Before I knew it, I’ve already touched down at KLIA. My fever was gone and I felt better. We had dinner that included food like grilled chicken and fried calamari. It certainly satisfied my tongue and stomach but not my throat.

That night, I felt a severe pain at the back of my right ear that forced me to wake up. After several tries to go back to sleep, I gave up and mum had to fetch me to the hospital. The doctor on duty that night examined me. I was told that the right side of my throat had been so swollen that even the inner part of my ear was swollen. The doctor gave me an injection to ease my pain and prescribed me with medication.

I felt fine when I woke up in the morning. The pain was gone but something was wrong. I couldn’t hear properly with my right ear. It felt like something was blocking my ear canal, preventing sound from going in. It’s similar to how it feels when you’re underwater. I was terrified. What if it’s permanent like this? How can I live like this? Awful thoughts ran through my head. I Went to see my family doctor at a clinic nearby and he told me the same thing as the other doctor did. However, he prescribed me with different medications and told me that my ear would be fine after a week. I felt so relieved after hearing that from him. Every morning I wished to wake up with my right ear being able to hear properly but that wish never came true. I went to Pantai Hospital to see an ENT specialist hoping that this time I could be cured... I stepped into the clinic and told him what had happened including how many doctors I’ve seen. I noticed that his clinic was very unusual. He had all the utilities that I’ve

I experienced a miscommunication with one of the clients at Meadowbrook Veterinary Clinic where I have been working at for the past three years. One day there was a dog that came in for an annual checkup and the doctor discovered that this dog had Otitis externa or more commonly known as an ear infection in his right ear. After the veterinarian found the ear infection the dog was prescribed an oral antibiotic. After the medication was prescribed I was typing up a label that is placed on the medication bottle. I wrote “Take 1 tablet twice daily for 7 days” on the label. After about four days the owner called back complaining that the dog is in even more pain after he was given the medications. Once the dog came back to the office the veterinarian…

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

Obviously no one knows what happened but the doctors told my mother I had “forgotten to wake up” was the line the doctor gave my parents. They said blood had fallen on my vocal cords causing muscle spasms in my throat, making it impossible to breathe virtually closing my throat. After the follow up surgery the doctors brought me to the recovery room and came out to inform my anxious mother and father they could see me now the follow up was a success. My mother heard my shrieks from the end of the hall since the anesthesia had worn off, she now smelled blood and vomit all over me. I knew I was just happy to see the face of my mother not all those doctors I didn’t recognize. The doctors said I didn’t vomit but later contradicted themselves claiming I…

The diagnosis process of a hearing loss often begins with the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS). Hearing loss is considered one of the most common disabilities in the United States (Jackson, Traub, & Turnbull, 2008). Before the UNHS was widely implemented in 1990s, physicians, medical personnel, and teachers were responsible for detecting hearing loss through a long referral process (Fitzpatrick et al., 2008). Now, the UNHS helps identify children with hearing loss as infants to improve their learning and communication outcomes (Fitzpatrick, Angus, Durieuz-Smith, Graham, & Coyle, 2008). After children are screened, follow-up assessments are given and early intervention services are provided to the child (Fitzpatrick…

Sore throats doesn’t usually last this long. That was what concerned me. If I can recall, my friend had a sore throat, for several months. The weird thing about this was it never bothered him, not even a bit. When he went to get his annual physical exam, the nurse found a bacterial infection in his throat. It was pretty bad, it got to the point where he had to go through numerous surgeries to get rid his throat of the bacteria. I can’t imagined how unpleasant it might have been for him and his wallet. The cost of surgery is expensive, but I can’t imagine how expensive it might have been to have multiple of them. That’s why this whole sore throat thing is worrying me so…
