Confucianism Virtues in Disney’s Mulan

Mulan is a 1998 Disney film based on a two-thousand year old Chinese legend of a young girl, Fa Mulan, who secretly joins the Chinese army to bring back honor to her family. In China, one of the main religions practiced is Confucianism. Throughout the movie underlying themes of Confucianism virtues can be seen such as; honor for family and ancestors, duty to one’s self and devotion to order in society.(SpiritualityPractice). There are many examples of family honor and honoring ones ancestors in Mulan. The movie opens with Mulan preparing to impress the matchmaker to uphold her family’s honor while her father is praying to the ancestors that she will find a good match. Mulan’s meeting with the matchmaker ends in disaster bringing dishonor to her family(Disney‘s Mulan). Soon after a message from the emperor arrives declaring one male from every family must go to war. Fa Zhou, Mulan’s father, honorably takes his order to serve, because there is no son to serve in his place. Even though Fa Zhou is old and disable, he had rather die for his country than to dishonor his family by not going to war. Fa Zhou is the greatest example of the virtue of devotion to order in society in the film(Disney‘s Mulan). To restore her family’s honor and to keep her disabled father from going to war, Mulan disguises herself as a boy and joins the Chinese army(Disney‘s Mulan). In the film there is also a dragon named, Mushu, hoping to regain honor for himself. Mushu is a demoted guardian of the Fa Family. Mushu had previously dishonored the family and has since not been allowed to be a guardian. Mushu comes up with a plan to bring honor back to himself by going after Mulan to guide her to become a war hero(Disney‘s Mulan). As a girl, Mulan’s only duty to herself is to find a suitable husband that will take care of her throughout her life. Marrying well is also the only way Mulan can bring honor to her family as a girl. Born in a culture that prioritize social duties and the sacrifice of individual needs, Lee is known as a faithful husband, a good father, a role model to the Chinese population. Being gentle, modest and courteous, Lee practices Confucian doctrines emphasized by his late father in his interaction with the world. In the Taipei Review, Lee is framed as a filial Chinese son by dutifully bringing the Oscar he won for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon home to his mother on her seventy-sixth birthday. To compensate for his failure in fulfilling his late father’s expectations, Lee has found “a way of making up for his lack of filial piety: his films kept winning awards.” (Martin, 2005, p.151) Depicted as the faithful son returning triumphant from his…

The novel ‘First they killed my Father’ written by Loung Ung also displays the theme of ‘ family is the most important thing in life.’ The novel was about the life changing experience of a little girl during the Khmer rouge regime. The theme was portrayed through Sem Im Ung, the father of the little girl. Like the character Dom from ‘ Fast and Furious ’ the character Sem Im Ung was also placed into a position where he had to make sacrifices for the sake of his family. An example of this was when the character Sem Im Ung lied about who they were and where they are from, when he arrived in the village of Ro Leap. By doing so, he gained the trust of the people there and secured a job for the local Chief. The character Sem Im Ung shows an understanding…

As I sat down to watch one of my favorite childhood movies, Mulan, as a critic representing Chinese religion, I expected to see many changes that Disney may have made to the traditions to make it more understandable for children, but I shockingly found that Disney stayed true to many Chinese traditions. Something that stood out to me while watching this movie was the theme of honor and respect. This is a theme that is quite obvious in Chinese culture, and it is demonstrated in Mulan in many ways including the worship of ancestors, respecting others above one, and also the respect that woman must have for men.…

When Mulan finally meets the Matchmaker, the Matchmaker observes Mulan on how she acts and speaks. She makes Mulan recite the Final Admonition, which states “Fulfill your duties calmly and respectfully. Reflect before you act. This shall bring you honor and glory.” The only purpose for Mulan or any women is to bring glory to the family by marrying a person who will help the family, not destroy its reputation. Women are to act fairly and wisely and know how what actions they are acting. By following all these rules, glory will come to all women. This is also further proven in Alexander M. Bruce’s journal, “The Role of the "Princess" in Walt Disney's Animated Films: Reactions of College Students,” where he claims that the role of Disney Princess…

The first scene is set at night time at the Great Wall of China and gives out a feeling of sinister and danger. The only characters which appear are Shan Yu, his eagle, the Huns that attack the great wall, as well as the Chinese guard who tries to escape and give signal. The music and sound effects also helps creating this more creepy and dangerous scene; the second scene moves to the Emperors palace cleverly and gives out a very grand and royal feeling. The transition is also very ingenious as lots of realistic camera angles have also been used to show out such feelings and the characters’ characteristics. The third scene moves to Mulan’s house which is a total different feeling and event happening, it introduces what a girl Mulan is, which doesn’t fit into the Chinese community, the sound effects also suggests the personality of Mulan.…
