In Much Ado About Nothing, several relationships unfold. Within the novel, the different routes to love become apparent. A prominent relationship is that of Beatrice and Benedick. Former enemies, both Beatrice and Benedick fall in love through Don Pedro, Hero, and Claudio’s trickery. Before, neither character would address one another without a witty remark. With each new trick, both lovers reach a new milestone in their relationship, which can be seen through their communication and attitude. The scheme that Don Pedro and his men set up started the romance by helping Benedick fall in love with Beatrice, despite the fact that neither person actually loved one another. Through telling Benedick that Beatrice was madly in love with him and that she would be hurt by his hurtful words, Don Pedro and his men were able to make Benedick fall in love. Hero had a plan very similar to that of Don Pedro’s men. She was able to persuade Beatrice to treat Benedick as a lover based on the lie that he felt terrified of being affectionate towards a harsh woman like herself. Beatrice then began to understand her unfriendly attitude, changing herself to love Benedick just as much as he allegedly loved her. Lastly, when both lovers shared similar affection, Claudio and Hero were able to convince the others to bind their relationship forever by revealing the lovers’ personal works of poetry. Upon careful observation, the two characters were convinced of their love and began to look at falling in love with new, welcoming eyes. Each small trick created a stronger bond between Beatrice and Benedick.
