Toogood effectively played her role as a shy, frightened Puff. I found it funny when she danced with herself at the dance. She had her arms wrapped around her torso so that her hands appeared to be another person’s hands who was dancing with her. While this could might been interpreted as someone actually being there in the same way that the mop represented Ron, I saw this as Toogood’s character thinking she should do what everyone else was doing. Her tactic to achieve the want of fitting in in this scene was comical. Toogood did an excellent job making her character look frightened in the scene where the Puffs grouped together and chanted “We are not a threat.” To look frightened, Toogood bent her knees as in an…

She also takes great pride in her cleanliness. The girls in her troop, knowing that she is so shy, lay the hearing of the racial slur on her because they know that she will not speak up. And they’re right; Daphne is overcome by Arnetta’s dominant personality and does not say anything because all she wants to do is fit in. Once the girls leave the washroom, Daphne stays behind in her discomfort, knowing that what she did was not exactly right. To take her mind off of the troop’s anger and prejudice toward the other group, Daphne stays behind and cleans the washroom because it is the one thing that can make her feel good about herself. Daphne remains passive about the situation and does not want to get involved in the fight. Unlike Daphne, Laurel is very independent and likes to stand apart from the others. She is very thoughtful and will stand up for what she believes in. In the story, when her Brownie troop believes that troop 909 made a racial comment, Laurel is the only girl who does not believe it. She is the only girl in the entire group to give it a second…

Personally, I wasn’t really in the mood to talk to old Selma, but I figured I’d do so because she sat right next to me on the bus. I didn’t know what to say, so I talked about the upcoming football game. Saxon Hall was going to face Pencey’s very best quarterback, number 54, Tom Richards. Big deal. Selma certainly wasn’t the type of girl who gave any damn interest in these types of phoney bastards. I knew because she told me that all football jocks hanged out in cliques and treated girls like hell. I’m guessing she only came to these Pencey games, was to please her old man, being the headmaster’s daughter and all. For almost the whole bus ride, I hadn’t even asked where she was going. I didn’t really want to be nosy and all. I really didn’t. But I figured out I should anyways, out of curiosity.…

In the essay of “There Is No Unmarked Woman”, Deborah Tannen explains it best through the statement that “There is no unmarked woman” (Tannen 412). No matter what hairstyle, clothes, shoes, or style a woman may choose to wear, every one of her decisions will convey a meaning to the public. “If a woman’s clothing is tight or revealing…it sends a message…If her clothes are not sexy, that too sends a message…” (Tannen 412). There are even instances where the clothes are not the cause of criticism, for a woman may be criticized upon her genetic features. As written in the poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercg, a little girl grows up healthy and intelligent, but because other people deemed her as physically inadequate by having “a great big nose and fat legs”, the girl is coerced into change, and not anything like a difference in wardrobe, but permanent change with cosmetic surgery (Piercg 378). Such an occurrence is not far from reality for there are women who will do whatever it takes to be deemed as conventionally…

Pauline Breedlove (Polly), one of the main characters of the story, who is also the mother of Pecola and Sammy Breedlove and spouse of Cholly Breedlove, can be seen as a violent figure towards her family and seems to have a negative out look on life. The reason behind all this behavior can be better understood if we were to take into account of her past, the time frame this story was in, and which then would bring us to how its affecting others around her.…

The part in the book where Claudia tears apart the baby dolls should show the readers how blonde, blue eyed children are portrayed into everyone’s minds. Even now if you go to a middle school or a high school the “perfect” girl could easily be looked at as the popular, skinny, blonde hair, blue eyed girl. The thought that this is how people should look can make a dent in younger children’s self esteem.…

Toward the end of the story, the author appears to admit that racial dissimilarities are part of our life. Having her growing up in Atlanta south side, the author depicts her sensibility toward prejudice through Laurel. Throughout the story, Packer uses sarcasm to attest her feelings toward discrimination. Sarcasm in a sense that the Brownie young girls meant to be innocent but because of their financial hardship and family difficulties prevented them to becoming one. As the truth reveals, Laurel understands about the difficulty of life, empathy, the harshness of racism and her own…
