Mozart Sonata K545
Mozart Sonata K.545

3/25/2014

Piano Sonata No.16 was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1788. Mozart himself catalogued this Sonata as “for beginners” and it is also known by its nickname Sonata Facile or Sonata Semplice(Froment, 2010). This Sonata however was not published in Mozart’s lifetime but only later on in 1805. It is a typical Classical eraSonata piece written in C major and consists of three movements: I. Allegro, II. Andante, III. Rondo. In the following essay I will be looking at the first movement, which is written in Sonata-Allegro form. The well known opening theme is accompanied by anAlberti bass, played with the left hand (Froment, 2010). “The Alberti bass is named after Domenico Alberti and it’s the bass part in keyboard music that consists of broken chords in close position (Merriam-Webster, 2014).”
The exposition stretches from bar 1-28. Overall two themes are present in the exposition. The first theme starts in bar 1-12 in C-major. The primary idea is identified in bar 1-4. The first note in bar one starts on the tonic which is C (I) and then in bar two the second measure starts on the tonic note again but is followed by a rest. The idea is repeated again in bar 3-4, the tonic key in bar three and then the tonic key again in bar four followed by a rest. What is catching about this composition is the eight note sixteen patterns, which is present from bar five and then later on expands in bar 46-48. In bar five a scale is seen going from A-A, up and then down again. A similar pattern follows in bar 6-8 (Kemper, 2013). In bar six there’s a scale from G-G. In bar seven a scale from F-F and in bar eight a scale from E-E. This is a sequence, each time the scale starts in a new bar it moves one step lower (Piano World, 2005). Between bar ten and eleven a half-cadence is seen. In bar thirteen the transition takes place. Before the transition takes place we note that in bar twelve on the third beat the dominant chord is

The exposition begins with the 1st subject after the introduction (bars 1-12) and immediately introduces the 3-note rising motif consisting of G (5th), B (major 7th) and C, which is the tonic of not only the movement but also the symphony as a whole. They play the first movement, the Allegro, which is defined by a fast and lively tempo. Eugen’s violin notes are quick and sharp, forming part of the four notes starting the first movement. The melodramatic pauses leave the audience guessing where the sonata will lead. A sampling of Mozart's mature works comprise a virtual honor roll of musical masterpieces: the last ten string quartets, the string quintets, and the Quintet for clarinet and strings; the Mass in C minor and the unfinished Requiem; the Serenade for thirteen wind instruments, the Clarinet concerto, the late piano concertos, and the last six symphonies. Mozart's more than twenty piano concertos remain models of the classic concerto form, developed by him over time into works of symphonic breadth and scope. The concertos often begin with an elaborate sonata form first movement, followed by a tender and melodious second movement, and usually conclude with a brisk, engaging rondo, as in the Piano Concerto no. 22 in E-flat. In his last three symphonies, the second of which is the great Symphony no. 40 in G minor, Mozart infused this form with a passion and expressiveness unheard of in symphonic writing until the advent of…

The central traits of the Classical style are all present in Mozart's music. Clarity, balance, and transparency are the hallmarks of his work, but simplistic notions of its delicacy mask the exceptional power of his finest masterpieces, such as the Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491; the Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550; and the opera Don Giovanni. Charles Rosen makes the point forcefully:…

On Saturday October 27, at 7:30 PM I attended a Senior Half Recital given by the Department of Music at Ohio Northern University Getty College of Arts and Sciences. This recital focused on four musical selections which were Fantasia No.3 by Mozart, Prelude No.20 and No.4 both by Chopin, Piano Sonato No. 8 by Beethoven, and Morning Mood by Greig. I was extremely drawn to the style, sound and mood of the melody generated by Prelude #4 and Morning Mood.…

The piece consisted of only one melody, performed by male voices in sync without any instrumental sounds. In addition, the tone of the piece was modal with tonic pitch of G and the third above it. Since the dynamics of the piece maintained from mezzo piano to mezzo forte without sudden or drastic dynamics changes, the piece flowed smoothly creating a great pleasure to the listeners. I enjoyed the smoothness of the piece and the descending scalar passages greatly adopted throughout the music. However, I did not appreciate much of the free style of the stanzas and the short…

    Mozart K280 Form Analysis

The exposition starts out in F Major with a small two measure introduction, followed by Group 1 material. This is important because he uses the 16th note idea later in transitions between groups as well as the development. The first transition uses triplets as a means to modulate to C Major by using secondary dominants. It is also worth noting that the transitions between groups are exceptionally long. I believe this is to make up for the surprisingly short development section later in the piece. Group 2 comes into view, being in C Major for the rest of the exposition and by expounding on the 16th note idea. The Group 2 motive of quarter note triad followed by 16th note runs come back in the development. The next transition uses triplets again, but in a different fashion. He cuts the first note of every bar in the right hand while the left hand goes chromatically from E to A in place of the cut triplet notes. This small idea comes back briefly in the development. The next section is hard to describe. Some might say it is the closing theme, while others might say it is a precursor to the closing theme. I tend to think the latter. He could have ended it from the second transition to the little three bar closing theme just fine. I think he just added the precursor as a little fluff.…
