Moralistic Image
Before I could even begin to write this essay, I had to research what the fideistic and moralistic image was; therefore, allowing me to explain how those images relate to our first chapter. By definition, fideistic mean, “reliance on faith rather than reason in pursuit of religious truth” and moralistic mean, “having or showing strong opinions about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior”. Now that I have acquired an understanding of the two term that I’m suppose to explain, I can now examine the text for details to support these two open-ended terms. Borg begins the chapter with a great example of a Christian moralistic image. Borg states, “The way images of Jesus give shape to the Christian life is illustrated by two widespread …show more content…
For example, on page two, Borg states, “The image of the Christian life to which the image of Jesus leads is clear: it consists primarily of believing- that Jesus was who he said he was and that he died for our sins.” What Borg means by this is that the whole Christian faith is composed on beliefs and absolute faith rather than definite, proven facts. Another example of the fideistic image within the text was on page 7 when Borg was talking about what his faith taught him to believe in as a child. As a child Borg had a reliance on his faith when he was recalling images of Jesus, saying, “I remember pictures of Jesus with sheep, and with children. I knew he liked children; that was a big message when we were kids. Clearly, he was important. I knew that he was God’s son, and that he had been born in a miraculous way.” As a child, your reliance on your faith has to be strong to believe in such complex theories and ideas. The beginning of chapter one had a plethora of example that would give explanation of what the fideistic and moralistic image is. The fideistic image is relying on your faith to lead you and moralistic image is how you are viewed from your organization based on what they believe is right and
