In the article, Mizzou, Yale, and Free Speech, Nicholas Krsitof discusses today’s most sensitive issue: racism. His audience is the people of the United States so he is sure to pull out all of the most controversial issues. He carefully tip-toes around the subject of racism when he shifts the focus from racism and points his readers towards accepting all forms of diversity. He incorporates the need for acceptance of diversity and the increasing cry for the first amendment, also known as, freedom of speech. He attempts to cover every perspective in his article when he goes from the point of view of a liberal, a Christian, and even a transgender person. He makes the audience sympathize with the African American teacher when she says “I have been called the N word too many times to count.” It was previously mentioned that the author spoke from many different perspectives so he can get an emotional response from more than one type of group. He brings up the “Black Lives Matter” controversy which tends to bring out some sort of emotion in the majority of Americans. Either people are completely supportive of the phrase or people believe that it should be “All Lives Matter.” There are few people truly do not care so this creates an emotion response. The final emotional appeal is when a student says “I don’t want to debate. I want to talk about my pain.” The two most frequent reactions to this is either complete sympathy and maybe even pity or it could be the complete opposite. Some people saw this quote and was off put by the immaturity it displayed.     Green created an empowering tone whilst presenting his speech. He used certain words to capture the attention of the audience. For example, Green repeats “It is true” in the beginning of the second and third paragraph. He followed that line with many harsh facts of the injustice, and imprisonment the African Americans had to go through. Green used this to almost degrade them and feel unworthy. Green is bringing them down with his words to make them face what is really happening in this “auspicious moment.” Green brings African Americans down but in the third paragraph he shifts saying words like “brethren” and “our duty” to enlighten their spirits and show them that this is possible to overcome. Green also includes quotes in the first and last paragraphs to affect African Americans egos. Green contradicts himself with the quote in the first paragraph because he makes the African Americans seem positive, while in the quote in the third paragraph he describes the hardship battles African Americans went through daily; by saying “tried men’s souls.” Green used this to murder the egos of the audience, but it was all a plan because he would raise their attitudes to gain praise.…

    He uses pathos to create sympathy by telling a story of kids growing up in poverty while lacking the services that should be provided. From that it makes the black community upset with the government and causes to have to further himself to Rev. Jeremiah Wright but also lets the people know the good and bad about him. For instance in the speech he says that “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.
