Mixtape Essay
“Love and other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape” is by Amanda Holzer is a series of all types of love songs and I think it’s really cool how someone can make a complete story out of a list of songs. The mix tape kind of tells a story and at the beginning of it, the songs are about being alone then the beginning of a relationship starting, songs like, “All by myself” by Eric Carmen, “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, “We’ve only Just Begun” by the Carpenters and “My Girl” by the Temptations are just a few songs that are at the beginning of the mix tape. These songs are about the beginning of a relationship and the beauty and happiness that comes along with a new relationship. Sort of in the middle the relationship becomes a little rocky and unpredictable and hints of cheating. Songs like “There goes My Baby” by the Drifters, “What’s Going On?” by Marvin Gaye, “Where Did you Sleep Last Night” by Leadbelly, “Your Cheatin’ Heart” by Tammy Wynette are a few songs that enter the middle of the mix tape. But towards the end, the songs get colder and we see that the relationship is over. “Breaking up is Hard To Do” by Neil Sedaka, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, “All Out of Love” by Air Supply and “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen are the final songs that end the relationship so to speak. We see through this mix tape that people start out alone and they end up alone in the end.
The range of when most of these songs were released spanned over several years. This shows that in a relationship, most of the feelings portrayed through the songs on this list last quite a while. You can be feeling alone for any amount of time. Weeks, months, years. Then all of a sudden you get swept off your feet for what feels like forever. And just as fast as that happened, you could be in the predicament you were in from the start.
With this story I found that the songs are the characters themselves. Each one has a personality to it. They convey feelings individually, as well as a group. A perfect

All though my parents never got a divorce I feel a connection with different pieces of the song and I thoroughly enjoyed the way he expressed his emotions throughout the song in words I would have never thought of using. The song is very vocal with a quite instrumental background that ties it all together, he uses so much emotion and power in his singing that it’s hard not to feel the same emotions he is feeling in this song. He talks about his parents fighting and him trying to keep them together which I feel like most children have tried to do when their parents are fighting.…

“Scouts of Honor” was a video that shocked me to know that the largest youth movement in the country, in which values are treating everyone equally and standing up for what you believe in, would ban gays to be a part of their organization. One in five boys in American are a boy scout. In Petalima, California, troop # 174, a twelve-year-old boy by the name of Steven Cozza started an anti-gay stand by the name of “Scouting for all”. They held petitions and set up stands at local grocery stored. They also went to San Francisco to the gay freedom day to take a stand. Steven chose to do this because of the expulsion of gays from the scouts. The New York City Police Department even opted to help in their efforts when they heard about what Cozza was doing. Cozza spoke about the increased suicide rates of teen who are searching for acceptance and trying to figure out why society is so against the homosexual community. It was justified that a gay man as a leader of a boy-scout troop would in turn be a child molester. Even the Boy Scout Association of America stated that studies show gays are less likely to be child molesters that heterosexuals. In the case against Tim Curry, the Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts of American was a private institution and they could ban gays from their organization if they so desired. The boy-scout handbook teaches you to love everyone, not just certain people. Steven showed this contradiction to Americans at his rallies. Scott Cozza, Steven’s father, was forced to resign at Assistant Scout Master of Steven’s troop because f his involvement in the “Scouting for All” campaign. The banning of homosexuals from the boy scouts defeats the puproses and teachings of the boy scouts morality as a whole. In 1999, James Dale won a court case against the Boy Scouts of America stating that they were a public association and that they couldn’t discriminate on gay members. In 2000, the Supreme Court overruled their decision and stood by…

The Mental Health Act of 1983 covers the detention of people deemed a risk to themselves or others. It covers four categories of mental illness: severe mental impairment, mental impairment, psychopathic disorder and mental illness. Psychopathic disorder relate to people who have a "persistent disorder or disability of the mind" which leads to aggression. The Act allows people considered to be mentally ill to be detained in hospital and given treatment against their will. They are usually detained because it is considered in their interests and for their own safety, but they may be held because they are deemed a risk to others, but they do not have to of committed a crime of harmed anyone. Medication for mental disorder can be prescribed and administered to some categories of patients detained under the Mental Health Act without their consent for a period of three months. After that, medication can be administered only in certain circumstances. The Act allows for detention for several different periods. People can be detained against their will for 28 days if two doctors agree to their committal, usually for patients being detained for the first time for assessment. Patients may also be detained for up to six months, but this requires the consent of the person's nearest relative. This order can be renewed after six months and then annually. Patients can also be admitted under an emergency order on the recommendation of a doctor. Patients that are detained voluntarily can be prevented from leaving if they are still deemed a risk to themselves and the public. The Act covers other orders, including guardianship and people detained as a result of a criminal trial.…

Forcing himself on radio shows, freestyle battles, Marshall threw himself head first into the rap game, where he was swallowed up most of the time. His very first album was titled "Infinite" and, while the album sold less than a thousand copies, it was the gearing up stages for the rapper who became a millionaire. It was then that his daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, was born on December 25th of 1995 with long time girlfriend Kim Scott. Having nothing to lose at all, flat broke and not knowing where he would be living the next week, Marshall set out to rant about life in general, the set quickly caught the ear of hip-hop's difficult-to-please underground. What came out of this was the Slim Shady EP, the early work for the later Dr. Dre revised Slim Shady LP. Down to nearly his last dime, he went into the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, basically hoping to win the $1,500 cash price which he badly needed. After battling for an hour and throwing back every race diss thrown at him, Marshall made it to second place losing in a slip up. Furious that he had lost, Marshall didn't even notice that he had been spotted. In the crowd were a few producers from Interscope, and they were handed a copy of the "Infinite" tape by way of a demo. Dr. Dre got to hear it and eventually tracked him down. The two instantly hit it off, recording four songs in the their first six hours of working - three which made it to his first LP. After the album was finished, Dr. Dre asked Marshall to come work with him on his new album. He helped produce several tracks and was on the best songs of the…

Rather than focus on the gloomy and lonely lives people live, they focus on how people can grow and come together in times like this. The artists also inspire intense emotions through their music. Emotions create effective works of art. This musical has a beautiful message that everyone needs to hear and has touched me this year as I have faced the same feelings as Evan and many other high school students who feel as though they are “on the outside always looking in” (Waving Through a…
