Miss Julie Analysis
On May 11th 2017 I went to see Miss Julie performed at Shaking The Tree Theater in in Southeast Portland. Miss Julie is a drama adapted by Craig Lucas and directed by Samantha Van Der Merwe, who also was the scenic designer. The show revolved around a cast of three, the character Miss Julie was performed by Beth Thompson, her lustful lover Jean who was played by Matthew Kerrigan and his fiance Kristine who was performed by Kelly Godell. In this analysis I will be discussing the performance of the two main characters Miss Julie and Jean. I will also be discussing the choices made by the costume designer Alanna Hylton, as well as the set design. Miss Julie was portrayed as a breathtaking, yet spoiled rotten daddysgirl. A performance Beth Thompson …show more content…
She represented all of the things I think of most people with wealth, she was constantly put together, she carried herself as if she was above her servants by ordering them to do things, and she had very good posture. Julie was even well educated and was able to speak french fluently. Her face was cold, she constantly looked like she was thinking of a deep painful thought. However, her voice was very soft and caring, except when she did not get her way. If things did no go as planned she would remind her servants of who was in charge. She would constantly assert her dominance by placing both hands on the table and looking down upon her staff. She was not even to take her shoes off, stomp her feet, or even spit on her servant and secret lover …show more content…
He would constantly alter his voice to the mood from talking respectfully to Julie to screaming and talking down upon her. Jean also would constantly grab Julie showing that he was not afraid of taking control of the situation, at one point he even grabbed her violently by the crotch. Like Julie, Jean was also able to speak french, something unusual in a servant. When jean got angry or excited he would show it in his face, he was constantly moving his eyebrows, and when yelling you could even see a vein pop in his neck. He would also move around the stage, shifting from sitting in the chair, to sitting on the stage, to doing the dishes and grabbing drinks. Jean would also speak with his hands, throwing them forceful through the air when trying to make a

This film follows our protagonist, Stella (Barbara Stanwyck) through her journey of courtship, marriage to loss. Stella sneaks her way into meeting Stephen Dallas (John Boles) after finding out in a tabloid magazine article about his family fortune being loss and him ending his engagement to Helen (Barbara O’Neil) the socialite. Stella’s complete devotion to her daughter Laurel (Anne Shirley) and her reluctance to change who she is, keeps her from moving to New York with her newly promoted husband Stephen (John Boles). Living separate lives, not completely confessing to the fact that the couple was what would currently be called “legally separated” due to probable censors. The film’s thematic of maternal sacrifice and the loneliness, devotion of the film cause this movie to become what is known in the film industry as a “Weepie”. The Mise-en-scene of the film is predominantly domestic and focused on the excesses of interiors and Stella’s outlandish fashions. The film cannot be categorized as realistic, even though it seems naturalistic at times. The storytelling of Stella’s constant journey to better her life and that of Laurel’s, is purely stylized. Stella’s persona sticks out like a sore thumb against the socialite circles, dressing in the eccentric fashions she deems as stylish, speaking too loud, not fitting into the lady-like deportment her husband demanded.…

Little Miss Sunshine was the feel good movie of the summer, opening on July 26, 2006. The minds behind the camera were Michael Arndt, who wrote the screenplay, and directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The movie would not have come together if it had not been for the awesome cast that brought it all together, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, and Alan Arkin. Not one of the 17 awards and nominations for the movie and cast could have happened if it had not been for Fox Searchlight Pictures and Big Beach production companies for believing in bringing the story to the big screen.…

    Janet Kourany Analysis

In her essay “A Feminist Primer for Philosophers of Science,” philosopher Janet Kourany describes science’s ugly history with women. From perpetuating androcentric societal biases to neglecting women’s health needs, science, Kourany argues, has been instrumental in decelerating feminist social progress. Now, in a social rebirth of feminism, does science have an obligation to undo its harms by joining the feminist movement? To answer this question, I first explain how science has slowed the progress of women in the United States. Then, I define the terms I use to evaluate Kourany’s two arguments in favor of science joining the feminist fight. As does Kourany in her essay, I then contemplate broader conceptions of science’s interplay with feminism…

In conclusion, the costumes used in the film The Young Victoria have a significant meaning and impact on the film. While there is the element of appealing to the audience for the director to consider, this paper reveals that there is more meaning to the costume choices than just appealing to the audience. Rather, the director chose the ornate and revealing costumes of Victoria and the other women to show the disparity of power between individuals. This helps the audience unconsciously grasp the significance of certain characters, particularly Victoria, and her eventual rise to…

In the novel The Edible Woman, author Margaret Atwood tackles the difficult subject of anorexia nervosa. Although this subject is often handled with kid gloves by many writers, Atwood’s novel candidly addresses how different food related stigmas affect the main character’s day to day existence. In the late 1960's, young women faced a society that expected them to conform to certain qualities in both appearance and demeanor. The portrayal of young women in popular movies, television and music of the time period led to internal conflicts among women who struggled to achieve the norm put forth by society. Young women everywhere were convinced they needed to look and act like Marcia Brady and turn into Carol Brady even if meant sacrificing their…
