Crawl Space Mold and Mildew

Do you smell a musty odor in your home? If so, your crawl space may have mold and mildew. Crawl spaces are typically dark and moist, which are perfect habitats for mold and mildew. A crawl space that consists of mold and mildew will emit an unplesant odor, affecting the air that you breathe. Fortuately, there are solutions to eliminate crawl space mold and mildew and improve the air quality of your home in Iowa.

Since mold and mildew thrive in moisture places, you must first determine how moisture enters the crawl space. Crawl space moisture can occur when water seeps through foundation cracks.

What are some of the causes of foundation cracks? Some common causes include poorly compacted soil, soil erosion, hydrostatice pressure, and plumbing issues. When the weather fluctuates between periods of wet and dry weather, the soil will shrink and expand. This will cause the soil to move and shift under the foundation, creating voids, or holes, beneath it. Eventually, the foundation will start to sink and settle into these voids, leading to foundation cracks. This problem can also create a variety of other problems, such as floor cracks, sloping floors and standing water on the property.

Your asphalt driveway slowly deteriorates over time. The surface oxidizes, which causes the color to change from black to gray. Oil, gas, and rain seep into the asphalt and hasten the development of cracks and potholes. Cracks are more than an eyesore. They allow rain to drain into the soil beneath the asphalt layer, and this causes the soil to shift. The shifting soil causes the cracks to get bigger, and it can even cause the underlying base of your driveway to become unstable.…

Earthquakes are started at the Earth’s crust. Our planet is made up of different plates which float on a layer of molten material or magma much like potato chips would float on top of a bowl of water. Scientists believe there could be as many as 12 plates that make up Earth’s crust. These plates move freely like bumper cars: pulling away from each other, moving side to side or laterally, and even smashing into each other. The proof behind plate tectonics lies in mountain ranges and island chains like the Hawaiian Islands, both are products of plate tectonics. Earthquakes originate from plate boundaries called faults. The tension and movement between the conflicting faults is what causes the shock waves referred to as an earthquake. When the pressure between two conflicting plates is too much for the rock material to support, they can shift or break dramatically. The exact underground point where this occurs is the focus. Many people are familiar with the above ground version of the focus called the epicenter. When the plates…

Water can seep into a crawl space from just about anywhere. If your space has a dirt floor, it can even come up through the ground. Without proper ventilation, this water stays sitting in the crawl space, keeping it damp. Dampness leads to mold, mildew and rotting wood. The best solution is often to install a drainage system followed by a concrete crawl space liner. This allows for improved exterior drainage and a concrete shell that keeps water out.…
