Mike Moore Quotes For Critical Thinking
First I would like to say thank you for offering us this opportunity to receive extra credit because if you did not I would have missed out on a great opportunity. I believe this was one of the best speakers that I have heard here at Western Michigan University. I enjoyed the simple fact that Mike Moore offered a question and answer which allowed audience members to ask him questions. I liked the fact that Mike Moore is a democrat and he also hates Donald Trump and George Bush. Before Michael began to speak they had interesting quotes from him playing on a PowerPoint. The quote that stood out to me the most is, “I was raised to think we are all brothers and sisters no matter what race creed or color.” That quote stood out to me because I overheard students saying, all those people who are going to see Mike Moore are crazy because he is racist.” That is so not true. …show more content…
Mike said, Flint Michigan is not suffering through a water crisis it is suffering through a Race Crime. I totally agree with what he is saying it would not have happened if this was a city like Traverse City which is another thing that he said. The people of Flint are majority African Americans and this would not have happened to a predominately white city. I did not ever hear about the meme that Michael posted in which he had a pair of handcuffs with a hash tag saying #ArrestSnyder. Michael also said do not send bottled water to Flint for one they are bad for the environment and secondly Flint would need approx. 20 million bottled water daily. Overall this was a great guest speaker and I would love to go and see him again in the

He brought up the many accomplishments of African-Americans in the United States. He spent a lot of time referencing President Barrack Obama and the recent election. Personal involvement and interest was certainly indicated by the speaker by bringing up relevant past experiences throughout the entire lecture. His sentences were clear but if he felt as though they were not, Lee would go back and explain what he meant. His diction also expressed passion and seriousness because he occasionally used…

In her article, “Flint Water Crisis: What Happened and Why?,” Susan J. Masten (2016) first acknowledges that “many warnings and concerns were voiced regarding the use of the Flint River as a community water source.” In particular, Brian Larkin, then associate director of Michigan’s Governor’s Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives, and Mike Glasgow, laboratory and water quality supervisor, cautioned that the situation is ‘less than ideal’ (Masten, 2016, 23). Masten (2016) also explains that the inadequacy of the Flint water treatment plant and the failure to install a corrosive control plan largely contributed to the crisis: “Since the Flint plant had not been fully operational in almost 50 years, was understaffed, and some of the staff were undertrained, it is not surprising that it was difficult to achieve effective treatment.” She notes that the Flint water plant did not undergo sufficient pilot testing and corrosion testing before the switch of water sources and even after the switch, there was no method for corrosion control (2016,…

Chris Jordan has delivered an incredible speech regarding to the issues that we are having in our society today. He did a great job with gathering the data of facts with using these raw language of data, and translate them into a more universal visual language. I think, that it is true that we tend to create these issues unconsciously with our behaviors. He also did a great job comparing the number people who died from smoking with number people that died during the nine eleven tragedy.…

Moore’s writing successfully implements rhetorical appeal on many levels. It provides logos, or informational appeal by citing specific example to support each argument. He clearly provided evidence to provide and lend credibility to his arguments. Persuaded by his perspective, I found myself believing his statements that nuclear energy might not be such a bad thing because his arguments were incredibly effective. Pathos is achieved when the writer appeals to the emotions within the reader by painting a vivid picture discussing the dangers of nuclear reactors and the fear created by a hypothetical meltdown. Furthermore, the author gains credibility by stating how drastically his views have changed through the years. He also lends trustworthiness…

Throughout his entire speech/lecture/ whatever you want to call it, he was so real and honest. He started from the beginning of his life and how he was raised in Harlem. He Told stories about himself when he was young and how much of a rebel he was sometimes. When Carlos was young he didn’t know that there was racism in the world until he was almost a teenager. There is one story in particular about his mom that he told when he first discovered that people are not all treated the same. This was a turning point in John’s life. He then went on to fight his entire life for what he believes in. In 1968 when he put his fist in the air on the stands he chose to be free. He chose to stand for what he believed in. John Carlos is truly an inspiration to me. Throughout his entire life, all of the trails and struggles that he has had to face because of the decision he made, he never regretted it for a second. John lost his first wife because of it and everything that he had was taken from him. Some of the things that John has had to face in his life seem unbearable. It is unfathomable that he stood his ground and never looked back. Although so many people consider him a hero he is one of the most humble people that you could ever meet. He kept saying that he is just like us; we all have the power to make change in our world. Coming from someone of that much importance was great to hear. His humility stuck…

There are many issues that have led to the outcome in your life, from an absent father, instability in your living situations, your brother being influential, yet participating in negative activity, and your mother’s lack of involvement. When you sum all of these issues up the main issue that stands out is the lack of support and mentoring that is needed to foster a child’s development positively in a social environment.…

His speech about humility while he felt he was better than any man there of color. It sent a contradictory message to me, because he felt better than but still allowed the white men to control his actions of the evening by doing what they told him to do; just to get the money instead of standing up for himself and what he felt was right. Then he took the briefcase of money and was so happy about it, but they were only sending him to a school for black men. Where is the pride, or dignity in that? If they had really been doing him a favor they would have allowed him the same education their children where getting. Now that is what I feel would’ve been fair. He spoke of “cultivating friendly relations with the Southern white man” (Ellison 286 par.6) and yet these relations of the evening were far from friendly. This is also another…

After reading the book, it seemed to me that my thoughts chaotically stumbled one another in my head, and I thought that it will never end. Furthermore, it was not clear to me enough whether it was my thoughts, or perhaps thoughts of Darl or Dewey Dell. Perhaps Cash? The book consists of a greater degree of monologues, which at times are so immoral and disgusting, but at the same time breathtaking, that, sometimes, this book needs to be closed, and deferred on the shelf in order to comprehend what was just read and simply to start breathing again, as it in further reveals that they open more the real nakedness of the human soul in such an unusual situation.…

There are three main points in his speech which are Diversity of skin color or ethnicity (10:14-16:26), Diversity of fundamental value (16:26-21:15), and finally but most importantly is Diversity of viewpoint (21:15-26:10). His first main point is Diversity of skin color or ethnicity which I do agree because it is unscientifically, waste of time, and an excuse to shut people ideas if they do not share that perspective. Shapiro quoted Martin Luther King by stating, “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” By Shapiro and I agreeing but Malcolm X lost. Shapiro brings out the issue with his main point to his argument to why this is an issue. “Racism (11:05-11:07)” the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Shapiro announces the ethnicity and sex but the unequal treatment and numbers. The SAT bring up the black gain 235 point out of a 1600 scale, Hispanics a bonus of 185 points, and pacific islander a take away of 50 SAT points. People should not care if a mechanic is black, a doctor is Asian, or a plumber is Hispanic but I will matter on American college campuses by statistics. "It is a little bit frustrating for me to come in, sit down and look forward to hearing from you, talking with you, and seeing a room full of people who are standing in a way that shows they're not listening to me, that you don't want to engage," CBC claims as students began to turn their backs to him. "And I think it reflects poorly on everyone who does want to listen and engage." Later on he said that “It doesn't mean we're always going to agree on everything, but it does mean that we should keep talking." The reaction to such defense was rather mixed. Some in the room applauded at his defense for his actions and in response to theirs, while others only grew more agitated. CBC reports that some comments thrown at him that day were "Honour your promises!", "We don't have dialogue with liars!" and "Shame! Shame!" They also report that moderators at the event had a hard time attempting to keep the…

After taking the self-quiz and receiving a score of two I learned that I am probably a low self-monitor. Out of the nine statements the two statements that I put a check mark next to were the statements which stated that in different situations and with different people, I often act like a very different person and that I’m not always the person I appear to be. After reflecting on my score and the concept of self-monitoring I’d say that for the most part I agree with my results. It is said that low self-monitors prefer encounters in which they can act like themselves by expressing their values and beliefs, rather than abiding by norms and I can very much relate to this. Personally, I would rather be in situation in which I can be myself rather than to be in a situation in which I feel I am not being my true authentic self to only satisfy societal norms. Not only that but I feel as though I do not…

Each and every one of us will do things in life that we will regret afterwards. There are many forms of regrets that we all will have to deal with and it is impossible for anyone to go through life without making a wrong decision or saying something they wish they hadn‘t. As we know, there is a proverb in Bahasa Malaysia that is “Laut mana yang tak berombak, bumi mana yang tak ditimpah hujan” in English is “Nobody is infallible” means that nobody is perfect as everyone will make mistakes in our life even if we do not want it to happen. All these mistakes that we made will surely remind us that we are human and we cannot do everything right all the time and not to mention that even machines itself sometimes make mistakes.…
