Middle School Student Analysis
Even though I have only been at St.John's for one year, I have already drastically changes socially, and academically. For example, in middle school I was one of the shyest kids in the grade, I hated public speaking and I stayed in one group of about ten friends for all four years with no desire to branch out and befriend new people. However, after applying to St.John’s I knew this had to change. At my middle school I stayed in that same group, mostly because who we were was practically decided by the end of fifth grade year. If you were a jock you stayed a jock and if you were a nerd, like myself, you stayed a nerd. The boundaries were similar to the ones that are experienced by a prisoner in a jail cell. You can move around in your cell …show more content…
In fact, I met many of my close friends by just sitting with random people at lunch, something that i would never do at my old school. I also changed academically, whether it be how I study or the amount of effort I put into my classes. In middle school I did not really try as hard as I should have, mainly because school was free and I considered Middle School, specifically eighth grade, as a somewhat insignificant period between elementary school, where you learn very important topics, and high school, where you also learn very important topics. For example, in my eighth grade english class we spent the entire year on one book called The Omnivore's Dilemma, in which Michael Pollan talked about where our food came from and the horror that is the production of manufactured foods, …show more content…
For example, at the beginning of the school year I joined the investment club and thursdays quickly became the best day of the week. However in middle school I never took part in any extracurricular activities, whether it be drama, orchestra, or yearbook committee. Instead I showed up to school at 7:45 in the morning and i left promptly at 2:15, not wanting to stay a minute extra. I enjoy the investment club because I am fascinate how you can practically win money as long as you are able to read the market. It is also good because it prepares me for the future when I have more money, potentially student loans, and when I eventually retire. Also in middle school I was practically unable to try new things, mainly because if I was not the best or one of the best it was boring or aggravating. For example, over this summer I will be taking a photography class, something that eighth grade me would have considered stupid or

In American History we are currently studying the concept of sectionalism. Sectionalism is division within a country based in regional beliefs and interests. In the early to mid 1800’s sectionalism in america grew as slavery divided the nation. Slavery was ignored, comprised, and argued about by the states until the conflict drove our country into the Civil War. Although regional differences are not as distant these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country. These issues lead to what our history class describes as “modern sections.” One such issue is the 7 habits.…

“Girls, they wanna have fun!” Madonna did have a great clarification about girls in that song, but what is thought when someone thinks about girls? Make-up, dresses, and most definately shoes. However, for most men, the one word to describe them is complicated. They think girls always have those mood swings every now and then, or cannot decide on what to wear. One minute they are happy, but the next they are going to rip your throat out. Maybe girls are complicated in some ways, but what about school? School is that one word that most children dread, especially after the summer months that it follows. Some say that school is those “Seven Cruel Hours Of Our Lives.” However, a more confusing puzzle to the brain is when…

Before beginning the assessment, I asked the child some basic questions so that I could assess her prior knowledge. I asked her if she knew; what capacity and weight were, how do you measure liquid, what was larger 2 cm or 2 feet and if she could name some objects that came in gallon, pint, quart and cup. I also reviewed any other vocabulary words that were in the lesson.…

I tried my best to fit in but arriving at a completely new area and having to make new friends was an extremely scary thought for me. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t have any friends, and I felt isolated. All I wanted to do was go back to California to the familiar faces I left behind. As the year progressed, I was forced to break my shell and interact with others in my class gradually becoming more confident in myself and making new friends. The internal battles I had to endure in me becoming more social eventually taught me not to be afraid to build relationships. Learning this at an early stage was very beneficial to me because now I am not afraid to talk to complete strangers and even befriend…

According to a study conducted by EducationNext, “moving to middle school leads to a substantial drop in student test scores in the first year of the transition, and the relative achievement of middle-school students continues to decline in the subsequent years they spend in such schools.” One aspect of the educational system that I think can be vastly improved is middle school. Although middle schoolers are faced with numerous challenges, the middle school curriculum does not allow students to explore their interests and more importantly, doesn't challenge students enough. In middle school, there is not a lot of advanced coursework that students can complete. This is why I believe that middle school students should have the opportunity to take a more strenuous curriculum by allowing them to take high school classes, as this system will give students the curriculum that they need to succeed and it will give them an abundance of time to explore their interests.…

So when I started secondary school, I saw it as an opportunity to start afresh. No one knew me, I could be a different person, and maybe people wouldn’t be so mean. And at first, it worked. I had a group of friends, which was a novelty for me, seeing as it had never happened before, and I made more of an effort in lessons. My parents didn’t mind that I was going out every night to hang out in the park. They were just relieved that I wasn’t still a loner. I actually spoke to them at home, told them about my day; they were amazed.…
