Microaggressions

Throughout history, there have been many advances and innovations that have created new norms. The advances harkened from the Industrial Revolution, the Agricultural Revolution, the Internet, etc. have all played major roles in establishing new societal norms. They all shape how humans interact with other and the whole world. However, in 2016, we now observe the dawn of a possible new norm that, if it catches on, may spread like wildfire and become a ubiquitous part of human life by 2041. That norm is the rise of microaggressions and politically correct culture. Across the US, especially in college campuses, a rise in this idea of microaggressions and being “triggered” due to personally disagreeing with a statement or idea has been observed.
If neither side is willing to hear or compromise with the other, no progress can be made. This idea of politically correct culture also breeds humans who are not well prepared for the real world. Since they were taught in college just to hide from ideas contrary to their own, the people will be unprepared for the real world where they cannot hide from problems. More pressingly than this, a culture of microaggressions threaten the very principle of free speech. If one side blots out opposing viewpoints, then there exists no free speech. The culture silences those who have unpopular or controversial opinions. If this idea of free speech wishes to hold true, then those voices must have an equal opportunity to be herd. A culture of microaggressions may in fact become the new norm in 2041. College campuses currently build the foundation for this bleak future. However, humanity will suffer greatly from this “innovation” free speech will be bloated out in favor of those in power. Progress will screech to a standstill as no evolution can occur with a discourse of two opposing viewpoints. However, this is the present.
