Michael Mcfee Poem 'In Media Res'
The Michael McFee poem, “In Media Res,” seems to comment on detrimental aspects of marriage in relation to the human condition. The title itself hints at the author’s claim and how it relates to the scene depicted by McFee. For those who are unaware, Media Res loosely translates to “in the middle of things.” Rather than focusing on the wedding about to take place, or the events leading up to it, the author chooses to describe the condition of the groom as he slowly changes his body’s shape. Much of the poem uses phrases such as, “a wad of anonymous tissue swung in the same centrifuge of years that separates a house from its foundation” to put into perspective the physical change the man is undergoing. The words “anonymous” and “separates” also

It is essential for people to belong as it is one of the basic human needs in which we thrive for but some want to “belong to” and others want to “belong with”. The two texts I have chosen to explore the differences are ‘We Are Going” by Oodgeroo Noonuccal and a scene called ‘This Land is Mine’ from ‘One Night The Moon’ by Carmody and Kelly. They both emphasise the way white people tend to belong to and the indigenous tend to belong with.…

In 1814 Francis Scott wrote the poem that is recognized as our National Anthem. The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” was written after the Maryland fort was bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. In 2013-2014 there was an estimated 98,000 public schools in America. Many of these schools start their day with the National Anthem. In the past couple of years there has been controversy with people in the limelight sitting out during the National Anthem. Many people believe that sitting out for the National Anthem is disrespectful to the troops who go to serve in the places that try to take our country down. Other people believe that sitting out for the national is part of our First Amendment right for freedom…

In Mark Doty’s writings, varying views of a single topic can be found. As he analyzes topics through his poems or essays, he conveys many messages that are often opposites or seem to have no connection. Rather than one stance, he has multiple thoughts that are dispersed like a shotgun shell. Diverse opinions are found giving multiple positions to a single idea. Before dissecting Doty’s vague analysis, I first have to ask why he must he examine and analyze in the first place.…

The primary character of the work is John F. O’ Donnell an American comedian. In the podcast Mr. O’ Donnell is doing a stand-up show in which he shares with the audience his experience during a manic episode. Even though Mr. O’ Donnell chose a “funny” way to share his story, he did an incredible job educating the audience on mania and walking them through the experience of someone who has actually lived it. He also did a good job showing the symptoms even though he wasn’t really going through a manic episode then and there.…

He stood on the chair thinking. Thinking about love and loss and most profoundly, life. He shall stay unnamed for he is only a shadow figment of the society the commune. Lingering just over the ground in the vacant house the silence is ringing. Vitality is a multiplex of ideas and dreams regenerating in all forms of modern silhouettes. The man stands with a slant to the right, the cruel words from the commune echoing in his head screaming of worthlessness with acute points that punctures confidence and trust.…

Whether wedding day is the highlight of one’s life or the beginning of the end, the idea that marriage is a long, cruel process that tests the integrity of a relationship is mainstream. The choosing of locations, extensive dress shopping, broad guest list, and costly gift registry are just some traditions in planning the big night. In Joan Didion’s “Marrying Absurd,” she suggests that marrying in Las Vegas diminishes the traditions of marriage, so therefore the union will not be long-lasting. Didion proposes this through diction, setting, and enumeration.…
