Metabolism: Chemical Reactions In The Body Of The Human Body
Metabolism refers to all the chemical reactions in the body of a cell or organism to keep it alive. Metabolism converts the nutrients from the food we eat in to vital energy which the body needs to carry out daily activities. The respiratory system, cardiovascular system and the digestive system are the three body systems that are involved with energy metabolism. There are two kinds of activities involved with metabolism processes, these are; building up of body tissues and energy stores and the breaking down of body tissues and energy stores to produce more energy to for the proper functioning of the body. There are two types of metabolism, these are catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism is the process that involves the breaking down of large molecules (usually carbohydrates and fats) to produce the energy required for all activity in the cells. For example, when carbohydrate is broken down into glucose in the mouth. Anabolism refers to the chemical reaction in which simpler substances come together to form larger molecules. This reaction helps in storing energy for the body to use in the future. It also supports cell growth and the maintenance of tissues in the body. Energy is essential for making new cells to enable growth, repair, and development to ensure the proper functioning of the body. Energy can be obtained from the food we eat (mainly from carbohydrates and fats) a process called respiration. Respiration is the chemical process whereby energy is obtained from the body of a living organism with or without the use of oxygen. Energy is also essential in the body to enable breathing and take in oxygen. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose which is soluble in blood (can dissolve in blood).
