Mercutio's Speech
In Mercutio’s speech, he talks about a fantastical Queen Mab which depicts him as a very imaginative and spontaneous person. After Romeo reveals his dream, Mercutio begins to tease Romeo: “O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you” (1.4.58). Mercutio comes up with a fictional character on the spot and then makes a long speech about her. He describes her as the fairies’ midwife and as smaller than the stone of a ring. This is something impossible since fairies and tiny women do not exist. The speech also includes details like “Her chariot is an empty hazelnut” (1.4.72) and “Through lovers’ brains, and then they dream of love” (1.4.76).     In the same scene, Mercutio also expresses his view on dreams and desires in his Queen Mab speech. After Romeo says that he dreamt a dream, Mercutio says that he dreamt one as well, but says that “dreamers often lie”.
