Katharyn Howd Machan's poem, “Hazel Tells Laverne”, humorously ridicules fairytales. The narrator, Hazel, recounts the night of her encounter with a talking frog when cleaning the Howard Johnson's Hotel's bathroom. The frog bargains that a kiss to his nose can turn Hazel into a princess. Hazel reacts to the offer by repeating “me a princess” throughout the poem to emphasize how ridiculous and unrealistic she finds the idea to be. Besides, frogs don't talk. Hazel blatantly declines, and flushes the “little green pervert” (20) three times down the toilet. Hazel ludicrously believes that a woman of her social status can become a princess overnight, especially with the help of a talking frog. The poem suggests realism, not idealism. Fairytales…

The entire poem is written with a tone of sadness or depression. This evokes the senses of the reader by being able to sense how the girl is feeling and see how the words of others affect her. It can be pictured, this little girl who plays with the Barbie doll and it is just a toy, but to others it is the appearance that society wants and she soon realizes that when a fellow classmate hurts her with mean words. She can not go on with the fear that everyone sees her as imperfect or flawed, so in the end she gives up on trying and eventually gives up on herself. A simile in the poem, “Her good nature wore out/like a fan belt,” the message here is that she has given up on everything.…

Ha is a very optimistic person with her circumstances. First of all, in the poem “Inside Out”, she says “Maybe the soldiers will no longer patrol our neighborhood, maybe I can jump rope after dark.” Even with the terror of war that is only miles away from her, she tries to look at the good side of it. Secondly, in the poem “1975: Year of the Cat”, she writes “Mother warns how we act today foretells the whole year,” and “Everyone must smile no matter how we feel.” Ha thinks that she has to be as cheerful as possible so it could hopefully bring her good luck and take all of the bad things in her life away.…

I hated poetry. I realize that sometimes people have difficulty verbalizing there feelings. That's perfectly fine. I realize that certain words can be symbolic. That's fine as well, however I didn't see the point in any poetry that didn't sound like it came from a Dr. Seuss book. How people were able to identify with certain poets and comprehend the deeper meanings behind their works was beyond me, but who was I to judge? Then one night I discovered a poem about hands, not how hands symbolize some greater meaning in life, just about hands. Hands and love. That night I learned to love poetry, learned to understand how it can convey feeling in ways the verbal descriptions can't. That somehow you can learn all of life's lessons from a…

The poem is about a break-up, right after it happened, when the boy cannot even believe that the girl has just broken up with him. He does not talk about it like in usual break-up poems, all sad and sorrow, instead he is shocked and wants to make it back, before the girl said anything. He doesn’t want her to break up with him, he wants to make it sound like a small misunderstanding, and continue like it never happened. At first he repeats the sentence, just to himself; he does not want to believe it. The writer is talking in short sentences, but these are just enough to lay before us the entire history of the romance and its possible future…
