Media Violence
Seventeen-year-old Andrew Conley pleaded guilty on the opening day of his trial for the murder of his ten year old brother; leading to life imprisonment without parole. Conley was wrestling with his little brother when he put him in a choke hold until he eventually passed out. Following the murder, Conley stuffed his head into two plastic bags and dumped him in a park to die near their home in Indiana. The teenager previously mentioned to his girlfriend that he identified with Michael Hall from the hit television show “Dexter” and that he had the desire to be just like him. “Dexter” is a show about a policeman named Dexter who worked for the Miami Police Department but later in the series, viewers find out that Hall doubles as a serial killer.

Observers agree that by doing this, it would benefit their children for the reason that, “ The impressionable young mind can't differentiate between real and make believe. Therefore, the amount of violence shown affects the perception of young child” (Sharma). It is very difficult for young children to separate fantasy from reality which makes them more unaware of what’s right and wrong due to the influence of media. In the stages of development, children often are heavily influenced by the things they see happening around them, this includes things seen in the media. “The vivid portrayal of violence as a means of justice gives them a false sense of right and wrong. Hence the amount of violence the media broadcasts ought to be censored at least for children. Also the casual approach towards topics of sex and pornography is giving very wrong ideas to the young minds” (Sharma). Violence and sexual content are overused in the media making it hard to escape especially for children. These negative aspects of media give children thoughts about bad things and behaviors that they wouldn’t think of otherwise. Protecting children from things like violence and sex is most important when they are still at a stage of their life where they are easily influenced and have not developed to their entirety.
