Maximus As An Epic Hero
The protagonist in any epic genre film such as 300 and Gladiator is known to be a great hero however without the antagonist his role in the film would be vastly diminished if not completely redundant, the antagonist shapes the film in order to display the hero’s abilities and gives him the task that he must triumph over thus without the antagonist the protagonist is not necessary destroying the fundamental keys of the epic movie.
Through out the film Maximus is depicted as the epic hero through the use of film techniques, he is primarily shot at a low angle emphasizing his importance , he is often placed in a fram within a frime and put in birght lighting. This contrasts Commmodus entirely as commodus is normally shot from a high angle shot with his faced shrowded in darkness showing his evil.
In Gladiator Commodus through killing his own father and antagonizing Rome displays Maximus’ sense of duty towards Rome, therefore without Commodus the viewer would not see this sense of duty from Maximus. Commodus is just as much key in showing sides of Maximus in the movie as Maximus is. In 300 Xerxes displays the same sense of duty that Leonidis has towards his people by trying to rule over them, without this Leonidis’s

Commodus is the polar opposite of Maximus thus if Commodus Betrays the people of Rome and his father in so doing we expect Maximus to show his ultimate loyalty and he does just this and fights for all whom have been wronged. In 300 Leonidis is betrayed by a former Spartan soldier whom is rejected for his inability to stand properly as he cannot defend himself properly, due to this betrayal Maximus is forced to show his ultimate loyalty to his people and dies defending

Timeless classics throughout the ages are known for their plots and concepts, however these classics tend to follow a similar plot. This monomyth is called the Hero’s Journey, where a similar plot is used every time to create a story proven to be successful. A great example of this would be Disney’s Hercules, a story of the demigod Hercules who loses his powers and must redeem himself by becoming a true hero. With godlike strength, he defeats Hades and proves himself a true hero by being compassionate and chivalrous, and showing anyone can be hero regardless of if they have strength. The plot of Hercules follows the three phases of the Hero’s Journey closely.…

In the time of the ruling of Julius Caesar, all of the Romans loved most of Caesar's qualities. He was a good and popular leader and did a lot for the people. But some Romans had a problem with Caesar and plotted to kill him. These people were Brutus and Cassius. This started a civil war between the Romans. This war may have been prevented if Brutus and Cassius had done things a little differently. Cassius would have made a better leader rather than Brutus. Cassius also had more of a passion to kill Caesar. Brutus did not have the morals of a killer like Caesar did.…

The movie’s plotline still loosely follows the series of events that actually took place but has changed quite a lot of the facts. Gladiator warps the facts here because Marcus Aurelius supposedly was murdered by Commodus on the eve of this victory but Aurelius in fact passed away before going out to claim another land. Marcus did conquer many tribes and lands as emperor but did not in fact have a legendary general named “Maximus Decimus Meridius”. The events that actually took place in our historical timeline involve Marcus Aurelius passing away but not at the hand of his son Commodus. The official story states that Aurelius died from plague but some suspect that he was in fact murdered by Commodus. According to historical sources, Commodus was in fact a man of ill worth but Aurelius did give Commodus succession to the…

Heracles is the greatest of the Greek heroes for his courage, strength, and skill to fight against the evil. Although Hercules himself committed one of the most evil deeds by killing his own wife and children, Goddess Hera made him pay for his deeds. Goddess Hera led Hercules sentence to twelve years of penance – a period of hard labor. Unlike the punishment a criminal would get today of either imprisonment or execution, Heracles had to endure the imaginable suffering of the twelve impossible tasks even after regaining his senses. His first labor was to battle a Nemean lion and bring in the skin of the lion. The lion was so huge that his strength and powerful bows were dull compared. He, nonetheless, did not lose his strength and fought the…

Not every hero can lift cars or fly, some are heros for a much smaller reason. Odysseus is a epic hero because he went on a large journey and was a leader to his crew. Unlike Odysseus singer Taylor Swift is considered a hero since lots of people look up to her with the fame she has and the songs she writes about. Although they are both considered heros they have different reasons why they are considered to be one (a hero). There are many heroes that are all considered heroes but a different reason for why they are “heroes”. In the Odyssey Odysseus goes on a long journey along with his crew of men who battle with monsters and other civilians from different cities. They fight a cyclops by stabbing a large stick into his eye after he (the cyclops)…

Although the hero in many films is very courageous, I resonate more with the villain because they are smarter and more creative, always stand up for what they believe in, and are willing to do anything to achieve their goals. I will take these values with me into the next stage of my life. As Marilyn Manson once said, “In any story, the villain is the catalyst. The hero's not a person who will bend the rules or show the cracks in his armor. He's one-dimensional intentionally, but the villain is the person who owns up to what he is and stands by it.” I don’t want to be a one-dimensional being; I want to be both complex and raw.…

Cassius begins the conspiracy, inciting the conflict with Mark Antony which escalates to war. During battle, Brutus hopes to “end that work the Ides of March begun” (V i 113), as all of the trouble has been caused by the plot to kill Caesar, which Cassius initiates. Cassius continues on the fights when he is “levying powers” (IV i 42), which means he is raising an army to fight Mark Antony. Cassius could have left Rome in Mark Antony’s hands and fled, saving his life in the process, but instead he chooses to rage war against him and Octavius. It is Cassius’ pride and ambition for the power over Rome that leads to his death. Finally, Cassius chooses to take his own life. He decides he is “fresh of spirit and resolv’d/ to meet all perils very constantly” (V i 90-91) before the battle has even begun, accepting his upcoming death. Cassius conspires to kill a man, then wages a war against the man’s avengers. He finally understands mistake by the end, calling out “Caesar, thou art reveng’d/ even with the sword that kill’d thee” (V iii 45-46). Cassius was the root of the dilemmas of the tragedy, and ended his life because of…

Yes he is, not just according to Aristotle, but also to the modern definition. Why wouldn’t he be a hero, he puts his life on the line for others. He is well respected by others, has many admirable qualities, and does not portray an ounce of selfishness. Even when Commodus had made a sly comment about how his troops slaughtered Maximus’s family, Maximus still gave Commodus the respect an emperor deserves. A hero does not have to follow the requirements of Aristotle’s definition to be considered a tragic hero. “Gladiator” was filmed in 1999, versus Aristotle’s definition which was created during the time of 300 B.C. Things change overtime, in the near future the modern definition won’t be as relevant either another new definition will be created. The definition of a tragic hero evolves along with society. As long as society keeps changing as well will the…
