MASS By F
“MASS”—a novel written by F. Sionil Jose, a Filipino National Artist for Literature. When I bought the book, and seen the awards it receives which is located at the bottom part of the book cover, I am curious about it that it gets awards not just ordinary awards but big ones. Like The 1980 Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts and 2001 National Artist Award for Literature.
The main character in the story is Jose “Pepe” Samson who lived in Cabugawan and who has a mother who dreamed of studying in Manila and leave Cabugawan to be like his Father. Reading the novel and Pepe’s life, I can say that Pepe is the symbol of Filipino race, being lazy perhaps, his desires to have food to eat, his concern for himself, his desires of being happy and his desires to have freedom. And Juan Puneta, who represents the rich that are influential and abusive. And there is a positive elite people who is represented by Betsy, who is part of the elite family and is ready to lose everything just to be with Pepe. And I somewhat see myself to Pepe, for I am sure that each and every one of us seeks what we truly wanted but doesn’t know how and each and every one of us has a rebel side in our hearts. And there is also Juan Puneta nowadays who crushed their own kind. Shame on this people for they should not be called Filipinos.
The story is set of the time of the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines. Mass is a political novel and published during Marcos term so I really praised F. Sionil Joses’s courage to speak by the means of this novel. The mass is the key to the success of revolution. We all know that because it’s written in history books and it really happened. But most people would rather live the life they had even though it’s not livable than to fight or speak their heart out. As they say, “Stomach first before your heart”. Included in the novel the problems in the society especially in Manila during the 1980’s and it is sad to think

Proceeding the 335 pages that make up Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is an excerpt from a poem by Derek Walcott entitled “The Schooner Fight” that ends on the line “either I’m nobody, or I’m a nation.” Diaz’s novel follows the character of Oscar, as well as the entire Leon-Cabral family, and their relation to diaspora from the Dominican Republic. Through the eyes of narrator Yunior, readers come to understand the complications of preserving one’s own national-identity within a foreign population. The character’s within the novel, much like the speaker of Walcott’s poem, feel the immense responsibility of representing their entire nation as singular individuals.…

The chapter 5 and chapter 6 and throughout chapter 8 of the book called, The House On Mango Street; represent an ethnic picture from both the past and the present of Mango Street and the surrounding neighborhood. Cathy, Esperanza’s friend indicated what the neighborhood may have been like in the past, while the two families that moved into her house once Cathy’s left were more representative of the whole neighborhood as Esperanza came to experience it. Along the Mango Street lived the black man who was unwelcome from the rest of the neighborhood, different from the people Esperanza sees from day to day. This guy race makes him so unfamiliar that Esperanza is afraid to talk to him. Cathy has shown Esperanza the neighborhood’s two cultures, Latin American and American, and two languages, Spanish and English, which revealing the new cultural makeup of Mango Street. Cathy also provided a window into how outsiders view Esperanza’s neighborhood, even though Cathy is blind to her own family’s similarities to the families around them. Cathy’s family was moving because the neighborhood is “getting bad,” a racist reason that Esperanza immediately understands. Esperanza’s immigrant family, as well as other families like hers, was, in Cathy’s family’s view, causing the neighborhood to deteriorate, and the only thing to do was to move. However, Cathy’s family did not seem to be struggling any less than the other families in Esperanza’s neighborhood. Their house, which Cathy’s father…

The main characters of the book are Reyna and her older sister Mago and her older brother Carlos. She has two half siblings Betty and Leonardo, but they are not as close to her as Mago and Carlos. When Reyna was two years old, her father named Natalio left their hometown of Iguala in Mexico to find work in El Otro Lado to build his dream house for his family. However, two years later her father told her mother Juana, to come to Los Angeles to help him make money for his dream house. Throughout Benito Perez Galdos’ novel, Dona Perfecta, Galdos uses his ability to draw his characters, in such detail, that he allows the audience to relate with his main characters, Don Jose “Pepe” Rey, Rosario, and Dona Perfecta. By the order of his father, Pepe Rey has left his home to visit the small town of Orbajosa where his aunt, Dona Perfecta, lives. Pepe Rey has recently graduated as an engineer. He is a man of the new generation, inspired by Darwin, German philosophy, and the miracles technology promises. He has little time and less inclination for the stoic, small-minded Catholic zealotry of his aunt and of Orbajosa in general. While in Orbajosa, Pepe Rey causes conflict within the town and his family because of his modern thinking. This thinking has terrible consequences, especially later when Orbajosa becomes embroiled within a terrible uprising against the Spanish government. Ultimately, due to his beliefs and modern thinking, Pepe Rey is killed by the order of his aunt, Donna Perfecta.…

The film is about Pepa Marcos, a TV actress, who is depressed because her boyfriend Ivan has recently left her for another woman. Finding out that she is pregnant adds to her misery, which she deals with by taking pills. She desperately tries to get in touch with her ex-lover, but fails to do so. To make matters worse her friend Candela finds herself in an unpleasant situation and seeks help from Pepa. Candela has found herself in a romantic adventure with a couple of fugitives, whom she was kind enough to shelter; thus becoming an accomplice herself. Through a series of unlikely events Pepa finds herself face to face with Carlos and his fiancee, the son of Ivan and his ex-wife Lucia. It is quite surprising to see that Pepa takes an immediate liking towards Carlos, and treats him like her own son. The entrance of a crazy ex-wife named Lucia, further strengthens the plot, making it more complex. Lucia’s story is that she has run away from a mental institute by fooling them into believing that she is in fact sane. She is haunted by memories of Ivan leaving her for Pepa, which drives her to gain vengeance on him by killing him. There begins a wild goose chase, where Lucia chases after Ivan and Pepa chases Lucia to stop her from killing Ivan. In this way, Almodovar weaves a story that confuses but also amuses the audience.…

The first theme that I think is apparent is the search for a better life. Conditions in the rural Philippines are hard for the peasants. There is hardship and exploitation. The peasant children have no childhood because they are working in the fields or in the market or home with the parents at an early age. The boys leave their parents' home in their early teens to find work and a better life, trying to escape the harsh and hopeless environment. Their families know and expect this. Carlos' mother tells him several times that he can go and that they are poor. They go from menial job to menial job trying to make out a living. The parents can't give them a better life in a farming environment and the parents and children know this.…

On many counts, I was awfully wrong. First, this novel has nothing to do with the study of medicine, anthropology or anatomy. It is a novel that every Filipino should be proud of. It is a novel written by a Filipino about Filipinos and for the Filipinos. However, it does not preach. It does not self-deprecate. It does not promote self-interest nor does it encourage us Filipinos to hate ourselves and wish that we were of different nationalities. This novel is part of who we are as it shows a pivotal part in our nation’s history and how our race was formed or came into being by getting sustenance from two colonizers, akin to two navels: those of Mother Spain’s and Mother USA’s. The two countries that greatly influenced our nation’s psyche and will forever be part of who we are as an Asian race.…

In the movie, the word “Filipino” had different definitions. The word originally referred to a person of pure Spanish decency that was born in the country. However, a travelling Chinese merchant (Lim) born in the country was also considered as a Filipino. Based on these facts, being born in the country is one of the major criteria in order for one to be called a “Filipino”.…

During the Japanese occupation, Filipino literature was given a break, as writing in English was consigned to limbo. Philippine literature in English came to a halt because of the strict prohibitions of the Japanese. Almost all newspapers in English were stopped except for “Tribune” and “the Philippine Review”; even American films were closed too. The drama experienced a lull during the Japanese period and the big movie houses were just made to show stage shows. After the tyranny of the Japanese, the Americans took over once again in 1945 and on July 4, 1946, the Philippines regained freedom and the Philippine flag waved joyously alone. During the rebirth of freedom, the early post-liberation period was marked by a kind of “struggle of mind and spirit” posed by the sudden emancipation from the enemy, and the wild desire to see print. Filipinos had, by this time, learned to express themselves more confidently but post-war problems beyond language and print-like economic stability, the threat of new ideas and mortality –had to be grappled with side by side. In 1970-1972 the youth activism was due to domestic and worldwide causes, this was according to Pociano Pineda. Activism is connected with the history of our Filipino youth. The seeds of activism resulted in the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. Pineda also said that this was the time when the youth once more proved that it is not the constant evasion that shapes our race and nationalism; this was in the period of the Bloody Placards. The youth became completely rebellious during the Literary Revolution. This was proven not only in the bloody demonstrations and in the sidewalk expressions but also in literature. Campus newspapers showed rebellious emotions. The once aristocratic writers developed awareness for society. They held pens and wrote on placards…

I suddenly found myself in awe even during the first couple of minutes of the play. The adaptation made by Teresa Lorena Jopson was never to be expected by anyone, especially those who read it, which created a sense of enigmatic presence to the audiences’ portals. It was as if the short story was strategically and artistically redesigned to suit a bunch of spectators which one can really relate on to. The play’s versatility reflected a side or a hint of some Filipino culture and outlook like the individualities of every woman character in the drama – the gorgeous and cunning youngest lady in the group, Laura (Ang Haliparot),…
