Culture wars is defined as the “clashes within mainstream society over the values and norm that should be upheld” (Ferris and Stein, pp. 87). It is apparent that cultures disagree on all kinds of topics. Today it has really become a hot topic with the destruction of historical monuments and request for removal of historical monuments at different places and from different periods of time. The culture that I have been brought up in sees the flags, the statues all as pieces of our past. They not only represent historical people but represent the thoughts and ideas of the people who erected those statues years later. We see these statues not as prejudice but as part of history and should be preserved as such. The other culture see these statues as an approval of the person and what they stood for. They see it as totally prejudice and feel they have no place here in America. I know my story is small compared to the culture wars that exist today. If we as Americans could blend our cultures like my small community did I am sure a great compromise could be reached. One that would not only preserve history but clearly define and point out the mistakes that where made along the way. I don’t see culture wars ending as it is how we correct mistakes that are made in society. My only wish is that society would try harder to reach compromises as my high school did back in
