Over time, camping can become a way of life, using many different skills you wouldn’t use otherwise. Camping is a special type of vacationing that can teach you different kinds of skills you probably wouldn’t use in everyday life such as: learning to roast the perfect marshmallow, building a fire, making use of material you have, and so much more. While in the Upper Peninsula for a couple weeks my dad and I had many marshmallow roasting contests to see who could make the best smore. For most of the weeks my dad had me beat 10 to 1, however by the end of the vacation he had taught me what it takes to roast a perfect marshmallow. Although I still struggle to roast the perfect marshmallow every time, I now know that I shouldn’t stick my marshmallow

With just two students left to get on, the balance board rises and falls slowly, as those two people creep onto the board, making sure it does not make any contact with the ground. Then the whole group cheers, as they have just completed the challenge in record breaking time. This explains the “whale watch” challenge at the Pine Lake Challenge Course which is where the eighth graders from Corpus Christi School had just visited. Pine Lake Challenge Course is an adventurous, outdoor activity center in which to complete the task at hand, it is necessary to work with and cooperate with the other ten students in the proximity. My expectations of the day were not met because of a certain, few people.…

In chapter 5, Duhigg described a well-known experiment that was performed by scientists at Stanford that tested the willpower of a group of four-year-old children. The children were offered a deal. They could eat a marshmallow right away or they could have two marshmallows if they put off eating the marshmallow a few minutes after the researcher left the room. Certain kids managed to disregard the marshmallow, while some gave in and ate it as soon as the researcher left. Years later, the scientists pursued many of the marshmallow study’s participants. The participants were already in high school and they were asked about their grades, ability to sustain friendships, and their capability to deal with problems. It turns out that the four-year-olds…

Would you ever be willing to sleep in the desert with thousands of people you don’t know? How about raise a family of six or more? There are many different groups of people in the world, and each group expresses themselves differently. On one hand you have the very religious people who only go by what the Bible says. On the other hand, you have the people who just like to party and have a good time. In this particular setting, Burning Man is a more positive countercultural movement than the Quiverfull movement. Members of the Quiverfull movement should be admired for the dedication they put into what they believe is right. They also cause harm in several ways, including homeschooling, not having enough money to care for each child, and the affect it is creating on the environment. In comparison to the Burning Man festival, its flaws are there is a lot of partying, sex, and drugs, along with the use of gallons of fossil fuels. Its positive attributes are it causes less damage because it represents unity between people and their ability to express themselves through their artwork.…

Trying to reach the camp by himself with no one else, but a dog, the “Man” completely ignores the temperature and believes that it “did not matter” other than an obstacle to get around. He believes that if a person keeps moving, the temperature doesn’t matter and it won’t effect the journey other than a hinderance of moving. The “Man” continues on his journey while his fingers and toes are already numb, leaving the rest of the body to quickly follow. After falling through ice into water, the “Man” is quick to build a fire and when he succeeded, the snow-filled tree dropped snow on the top of it. He assessed the situation and realized that “he should not have built the fire under the pine tree”. Pine trees are a weak type of tree and their limbs will bounce if pressure is applied, the “Man” ignored the obvious hazard and built the fire under the tree, finishing the fire and himself off. By ignoring the temperature and losing the fire, allows fate to complete with his death and make him unsuccessful toward his want of reaching the camp.…

Today I was dropped off by my crew, to start the survival series, where I will have to live in the wilderness and use the materials around for 11 days, with a camera in front of my head. I only came with an empty knapsack to carry the materials that I’ll find during this series. There are two rules for the series, I have to move to another shelter everyday and you can only bring things in your knapsack, you can’t just carry them, so it will be more exciting for the viewers to watch. I started by ripping off some branches from the trees nearby and went to settle under that small overhang near the mountain. I gathered some rocks that contained some quartz near the river, and broke them in half by smashing them into other rocks, then I smashed the parts together and got sparks which started a fire. After creating a fire, I went out to see if there are any food, I found a good amount of blueberries which can last me a while because it can satisfy my thirst too. I gathered some fallen leaves and slept on them.…

Walter Mischel had a horrible time trying to quit smoking. He started out young and as he grew older he just couldn’t stop smoking. He continued smoking through his years as a graduate student at Ohio State and into the beginning of his teaching career as a psychologist at Harvard then Stanford. His smoking was so bad he eventually was smoking three packs a day. That is just crazy to think someone can smoke three packs in just one day, but I also think someone smoking one pack in a day is crazy too. Mischel realized that smoking could kill him, but his attempts to quit smoking all failed. He would quit then start smoking again just like when most people try to quit something and can’t so they start right back up again.…

In 1972, a Stanford professor named Walter Mischel conduct an experiment called "The Marshmallow Test" that tested the will power of young children. The main goal was to study whether deferred gratification can be an indicator of future success. To test his hypothesis, he choose to use children who's ages ranged from four to six years old. The researcher would place a child in a room by his/ herself and give the child one marshmallow on a plate. He told the child, " I am going to step out of this room. If when I come back and the marshmallow is still there, then I will reward you with another marshmallow. If you eat it now, then you will not receive another one." i. scientific - I think that scientifically building this on the salt marsh is unacceptable. We know that there are thousands of organisms inhabiting it, and they`d all be destroyed during the process. The benifits are endless of a salt marsh, but include the fact that it is protecting us from possible floods, seeing as we live beside the ocean, and a river. Filtering our water, and like I mentioned, it`s home to many organisms.…

Winter camping can be very difficult. In the story The Iceman Campeth, the men kept a positive attitude throughout the process of building the quinzee hut. When doing winter camping you must require many abilities and needs. It is very important that you meet the standards of physical needs. Physical needs include air, food, water, shelter, and warmth. Requiring the physical needs are especially important during winter camping. In my opinion, the most important ones for are warmth, water, and food. I feel warmth is the most important because in the story he mentions how it is around 10-15 degrees, when it is this cold you should make sure to stay warm and wear layers. Another ability they demonstrated in the story was self actualization. Self…

In scouting, I learned not only how to cook meals for myself and those around me, but how to revel in the entire process. I developed a curiosity of and enjoyment in cooking and experimenting with different techniques. Probably my favorite recipe is a simple cheesecake, which is especially ironic considering one of my half-sisters recently graduated from a culinary school and is now a pastry chef. Appreciating and experiencing the outdoors is also something I value and take pleasure in; two of my other half-brothers are loyal open-air enthusiasts,…

From that day on the fire pit behind my house became my place of comfort. When I’m feeling depressed or stressed out I’ll go out and make a fire, listen to music and just relax. I’ll think of the one perfect night I had out there with my friends and it helps put me at ease. Even when I’m happy I’ll go out there and enjoy everything around it like the smell of campfire and the pine trees. No matter what mood I’m in I can go out there to sit and think about anything. I never would have guessed a fire pit could mean so much to me, but I’m glad I was able to find a place where I feel content.…
