Marlee Matlin Marlee Beth Matlin was born on August 24, 1965, in Morton Grove, Illinois. Her father operated a used-car dealership, her mother sold jewelry, and she was the youngest of three. Matlin was only 18 months old when an illness permanently destroyed all of her hearing in her right ear and 80% of the hearing in her left ear because of this she is legally deaf. Matlin parents chose to educate her in their community rather than sending her to a special school. Matlin began learning to use sign language around the age of 5 although her parents struggled they tried their best to communicate with her. After that year she returned back to writing her 2009 book I’ll Scream Later which is her own autobiography. This same year Matlin showed her sense of humor lending her voice to the animated series The Family Guy. In 2010 she was a pilot for a reality show called My Deaf Family. She was a finalist on The Celebrity Apprentice which was competing to win money for her charity The Starkey Hearing Foundation. The show aired in 2011 where Matlin raised the most funds that has ever been raised in a single event on any TV show before. Matlin also is the ambassador for disability rights of the American Civil Liberties Union. Matlin in 2013-2015 is playing as recurring character, Melody Bledsoe on the ABC Family show Switch at Birth. Outside of all Marlee Matlins outstanding accomplishments she supports many charitable cause like Children Affected by AIDS Foundation, The Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and The Starlight Children’s Foundation. The disability of being deaf has not one bit stopped Marlee from being a great person. From a young age she wanted to act and consume her criminal justice degree, write books, and have a family. All of her dreams have come true and she sets a great explain for any children with or without a disability to be who you want to be and don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams.
