Mark Anthony In Julius Caesar's Funeral Speech

In Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, Brutus and the conspirators kills Julius Caesar for abusing his power as an emperor. During Julius Caesar's funeral, Brutus faces an outraged mob of Roman citizens loyal to Caesar. Brutus reasons with them in his speech by explaining that he killed Caesar because he loved Rome more than Caesar, and Caesar had abused his power by being extremely ambitious. Brutus then asks the crowd to speak out if any was offended by what he has done to Caesar by questioning their loyalty to Rome. As a result, the Romans fully support Brutus and rejects Caesar as an ambitious emperor who considered power over duty to Rome. Brutus concludes his speech by giving Anthony, a beloved soldier and friend of Caesar, permission to honor and speak about Caesar for his funeral speech, expecting Anthony to speak in favor of Brutus. At the very end of his speech, Anthony cries out to draw one more immense effect, “Here was Caesar! When comes such another?” (line 249). Anthony conveys the message that there is no other man who could outwit the greatness of Caesar and he himself can only be the true emperor of Rome.
