Social issues: Marijuana in America
For generations in many cultures and in many societies marijuana has been a part of life. Some have used it for spiritual reasons while others have used for medical reasons. In some cultures it was used together as some sort of magic; combining the two uses together to heal the sick. In the Americas cannabis was given out in tinctures as medicine until the 1930’s when the prohibition of marijuana began in the United States. Here in America it has been a social issue since the mid twentieth century when it was criminalized by the U.S. government. During that time from 1850 to the 1930s it was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia and was prescribed for multiple conditions including labor pains, nausea, and rheumatism. (Infoplease) But not only was it common for medical practices, it was quite common for recreational use of the plant throughout society through the 1850s to the 1930’s and use of its properties continued well past that time. During the 1930s the U.S. Federal Bureau set out to criminalize marijuana, stating that it was a powerful, addicting substance that would lead users into narcotics addiction. (Infoplease) Still considered to this day by some authorities as the “gateway” drug, during the 1950s it was an accessory of the “beat generation”; in the 1960s it was used by youth, college students and “hippies” and became a symbolic standard for rebellion against authority. I personally take a stand that it has become more of a social norm these days. Majority of the people I have personally met in my life, from lawyers to doctors, college students and even professors have tried marijuana or have been around it. I have never heard any of them suggest that it caused them any harm. In a lot of my social circles marijuana is widely accepted and encouraged. During many of American generations it was used to symbolize ones freedom in the world and at the same time a stance against authority and conformity of the social need and wants of rights and
