Making Our Society a Better Place
MAKING OUR SOCIETY A MUCH BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN THROUGH THE MOVIE AND MUSIC MEDIUM.

The realities of this life go far beyond what we can see with our eyes, hear with our ears, smell with our noses, taste with our tongues and feel with our hands. The real issues of life go far beyond the frontiers of what we can contact with our five physical senses.

Through time, the movie as well as music medium has been doing a great job entertaining, exciting, enlightening, educating and enriching people; the movie and music medium today has become a vital part of people’s daily life. Through time also, the movies as well as television programmes people have been watching has been doing a fantastic job transferring cultures and ideologies from one part of the world to another; the way the western world systems operates and the diverse cultures of Africa are cross transferred or exchanged though the movie or television medium. People in Africa learn things about people in the western world on one hand and people in the western world learn things about people in Africa on the other hand through the movie or television medium.

Through time, we have watched and heard so many thrilling, chart bursting as well as box office hit movies and music, yet I want you to know that the movie as well as music medium is affecting or influencing our various societies across the world much deeper and intense than we really realize or know. What I am saying in essence is that the movies or television programmes people watch and music or radio programmes they listen to, apart from doing much more than entertain, excite, enlighten, educate or enrich them, have been a very strong, impressive, compelling, shaping, convincing, persuading and motivating medium.

So much has been happening in and through the movie as well as music medium that has been an ancient mystery to humanity; the movie and music industries I want you to understand goes far beyond all we have been watching or hearing and been

Music in America has changed and grown over the years to accommodate a changing culture. Not only does music provide an emotional outlet for the musician but also for their audience. It gives the listener a creative outlet in the form of dance as well as bringing like-minded people together. With the emergence of film, however, Americans had an exciting new form of visual entertainment. “Because they showed silent films that transcended language barriers, nickelodeons flourished during the great European immigration at the turn of the twentieth century” (Campbell, Martin & Fabos, 2012, p. 192). Film provided (and continues to provide) an “anything is possible” attitude. Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it” and that idea pushes people to think about what else might be out there. It has made society want to learn more, do more, and be more. Television changed everything, in that Americans did not have to leave their homes to have access to visual media. Whereas film showed fantasy and fictional events, television provided a window into real life with local, national, and eventually global news. Families gathered around their televisions at night, just as they used to do with radio. “It was the TV that exposed us to Civil Rights violations in the South, to the shared pain and healing rituals after the Kennedy and King assassinations in the 1960s, and to the political turmoil of Watergate in the 1970s” (Campbell, Martin & Fabos,…

The 21st century is known for a numerous number of advances in technology and music, and according to Brain Raftery, this has diverged the attention of movie lovers and critics everywhere. Richard Brody is not so fond of Raftery’s view of movies being “Something to Do When the Wi-Fi’s Down,” since he states from the start that movies matter to him, in which he also manages to explain the importance of how movies are “determined not by media discussion but by each person for herself.” However, he also accepts Raftery’s point that movies are no longer the center of attention of this generation, as well as, that’s criticism of movies has declined and are no longer as important as they were before. According to Brody, the reduction of attention…

Because entertainment such as film inevitably “contains, reflects, and promulgates” ideology (Grant 32), the shift of the film genre is almost always interrelated with the shift of the myth. This social ideology that derives from the entertainment is what Roland Barthe, a french literary theorist, describes as the myth. Barry Grant borrows the Barthe’s argument of the myth in his critical essay talking about film genre: “[He] argues that the very principle of myth is that ‘it transforms history into nature’— that is, cultural myths endorse the dominant blues of the society that produces them as right and natural, while marginalizing and delegitimizing alternatives and others” (Grant 35). This correspond with Glen Jeansonne’s view of Hollywood’s…

The term, ‘Third Cinema’ was coined in an interview with the Argentine Cine Liberacion group, published in the journal Cine Cubano (March 1969), and was then more fully developed in the manifesto “Towards a Third Cinema: Notes and Experiences for the Development of a cinema in the Third World,” written by Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino, members of that group. Femi Shaka describes it as “a tool for creating a revolutionary consciousness for the mass mobilization for society for social change,” (2003, p.90). It is therefore a filmmaking process that would aid nationalist movements in creating a new socio-cultural solidarity in the struggle against western imperialism and for national self – determination.…
