Mayella is an uneducated girl whom Atticus believes is lying about being raped by Tom Robinson. Mayella is rude to Atticus saying "Won't answer a word you say long as you keep on mockin' me." (page 200). However Atticus remains calm and polite, never attempting to trick her. He addresses her as "miss" and his own daughter Scout "wondered if anybody had ever called her ma'am or 'Miss Mayella' in her life." (page 201). African Americans were considered to be the inferior race during this time. Scout Finch says “Its windows were merely open spaces in the walls...What passed for a fence was bits of tree-limbs, broomsticks and tool shafts.” (Lee 1960 170) to describe the Ewell’s yard. Mayella and her family did not have much education. When Atticus Finch, Scout’s father, addressed Mayella as “Ma’am” and “Miss Mayella”, she thought that Atticus was mocking her. Clear evidence that Mayella has never been shown respect or has been educated enough to know that Atticus was being polite to her. Given these points, poor and uneducated Mayella has never had respect.…

Atticus said that he pities Mayella but “my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a man’s life at stake, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt” (271). The quote proves that Mayella is really evil because she is cold-hearted, she’s willing to put the innocent man, Tom Robinson’s life at stake just to get rid of her guilt and to cover up the crime that she did. She did not care about Tom Robinson who was truly the victim, her victim, she only cared about herself. Atticus also said that “she tried to put the evidence of her offense away from her. But in this case she was no child hiding stolen contraband: she struck out at her victim-of necessity she must put him away from her- he must be removed from her presence, from this world” (272). Tom Robinson’s life got annihilated and he died for no reason just because of what she did. And Mayella’s actions prove that she really is evil.…

After he fell she hugged the married man and proceeds to kiss him on the cheek exclaiming “kiss me back, nigger” (194). Realizing the situation he is in causes Tom tries to flee the house, but Mayella is standing in front of the door blocking his only exit while Bob Ewell is yelling “…you goddamn whore, I’ll kill ya” (194). Her fear drives her to lie to her father, and the rest of Maycomb County. Bob Ewell realizes that he can make money out of it since they are a lower class family, so he brings the case to court knowing he will win since he is persecuting a black man. The excruciating pain that comes from being viciously marred is indescribable and undeniably difficult to recover from physically, moreover mentally. Furthermore on mental abuse, the reader may be able to infer that the extent of the abuse Mayella endured goes very deep. A circumstance of that would be when Atticus was questioning Mayella, and she stated that, “‘Long’s he keeps on callin’ me ma’am an sayin’ Miss Mayella, I don’t have to take his sass…” (Lee 243). This illustrates that Mayella is so unfamiliar with the civility and benevolence Atticus was giving her, she interprets it as sarcasm, and a life where respect is so unfamiliar is depressing to…
