Comparing the Magnetic Moment of Two Bar Magnets using Equal Distance and Null Deflection Methods with a Deflection Magnetometer in Tan
Deflection magnetometer - tan A, tan-B and verification of inverse square law
Aim :
To compare the magnetic moment of the two bar magnets using equal distance method and null deflection methods using a deflection magnetometer in tan - A position

Apparatus :
Deflection magnetometer, bar magnets

Formula:
(a) Equal distance method
M1 / M2 = tan(θ1) / tan(θ2) where tan(θ1) and tan(θ2) are the average of deflections due to bar magnets M1 and M2 respectively (b) Null deflection magnetometer
M1 / M2 = d13 / d23 where d1 is the distance of M1 and d2 is the average of the distances of M2

Equal distance method ( Tan – A )

The magnetic disk was returned to the arm of the variable gap magnet being certain that the north end of both magnetic disks points in the direction. The variable gap magnet was placed beside a rod stand with a wooden crosspiece. An aluminum paddle with no slits in it was connected to the small end of the slots at the end of the wooden crosspiece. The height of the crosspiece was adjusted so that the paddle hangs directly between the poles of the variable gap magnet. The gap spacing was adjusted so that the paddle hung directly between the poles with just enough space to swing through. The paddle was swung between the gap to see if the motion was dampened as it passed through. This process was repeated for three different…
