Lula Carson McCullers, born February 19, 1917, in Columbus, Georgia, Was an American novelist whose stories generally depict the experiences of lonely or isolated people. Lula was described as an mediocre student, who enjoyed the solitary study of the piano, planning to become a concert pianist. However, she was forced to give up this dream after a bout of rheumatic fever left her unable to keep up with the rigorous practice schedule. While recuperating from this illness, McCullers discovered her passion of writing. From here on, McCullers life was stippled with illness and tragedy. In 1937, she married Reeves McCullers, who she divorced only three year later, after he was found to have forged a substantial amount of her royalty checks. Tragically,
