TV Commercials Should NOT be Loud
HOLY COW! Are you ever watching TV and then when the commercial comes on, BAM!? The volume gets really loud and you can’t hear anything! Watching TV and then a loud commercial comes on really scares me. Commercials don’t need to be loud to get my attention because it will just hurt my ears and I will mute the commercial losing all interest in the TV.
Loud commercials scare the crap out of people. They could spill their drink and then they would have to go change their clothes, and they wouldn’t even be by the TV to watch the commercial anymore. If they are home alone and choke on their food from the loud commercial, they would have to call 911, and to finish watching the commercial would be the last of the person’s worries. If an old grandpa is watching TV and reading a newspaper, then a loud commercial comes on, he could have a heart attack. Loud commercials are scary and could be very harmful.
Loud commercials hurt my ears. If there are always loud commercials, I’ll need a hearing aid when I get older. I won’t be able to hear my grandkids talk to me when I’m old if I always have loud commercials playing in my ears when I’m young. If I’m watching a good scary movie and I turn up the volume because its a quiet part, and it gets suspenseful, then a loud commercial blares and it hurts my ears.
If I’m watching TV at night and a loud commercial comes on, it will wake up my family. If I get caught staying up late watching the new episode of my favorite show, then I won’t be able to watch the show anymore. I will have to go back to bed and what teenager wants to go to bed before 11:00 p.m.?
Some people could be for the idea of loud commercials. “I like loud commercials because it gets my attention. If there were only quiet commercials, then I wouldn’t have my attention on the TV and I would miss a commercial about a sale on furniture!” “Yes, this is a good point, but if a commercial is funny enough and attention grabbing, then

According to Robert Scholes, author of On Reading a Video Text, commercials aired on television hold a dynamic power over human beings on a subconscious level. He believes that through the use of specific tools, commercials can hold the minds of an audience captive, and can control their abilities to think rationally. Visual fascination, one of the tools Scholes believes captures the minds of viewers, can take a simple video, and through the use of editing and special effects, turn it into a powerful scene which one simply cannot take his or her eyes from. Narrativity is yet another way Scholes feels commercials can take control of the thoughts of a person sitting in front of the television. Through the use of specific words, sounds, accompanying statements and or music, a television commercial can hold a viewer's mind within its grasp, just long enough to confuse someone into buying a product for the wrong reason. The most significant power over the population held by television commercials is that of cultural reinforcement, as Scholes calls it. By offering a human relation throughout itself, a commercial can link with the masses as though it's speaking to the individual viewer on an equal level. A commercial In his essay, Scholes analyzes a Budweiser commercial in an effort to prove his statements about the aforementioned tools.…

I have first-hand experience with advertising impacting my views and opinions. Jean Kilbourne, in Killing Us Softly IV, speaks about the influence that advertising has over people. According to Kilbourne, everyone feels equally unaffected by advertisements, when in reality, their effect is quick, cumulative, and subconscious (Killing Us Softly IV). This illustrates that advertisements sell more than just a tangible product: they sell ideas that we do not even realize we are absorbing. This understanding makes me think to how advertising affects children. When I was a child, I used to watch commercials with awe, falling into their trap of…

Advertising is used in American Society and drives the consumers of America to buy the new product. Advertising allows companies to inform people of their product. Some advertisers will do anything to get someone to buy their product. The line is crossed when they break certain moral values and advertise propaganda rather than the product itself. Because advertising works so well, it causes consumers to want things they may never be able to acquire, and because advertising companies are masterminds at targeting every kind of consumer, they have to ability to attract inappropriate audience members such as children, or sick/old people.…

Everyday ads are shown through newspapers and media. We can see them everywhere, from park benches to sides of buses. However, no one really pays attention to any of them. They are skipped, ignored, and turned over to the next page over by many every single day. The most commonly used saying about ads that one could hear is that they are simply “annoying”. Whether there is a celebrity in them or not, people just want to continue with what they are reading, trying to watch, or listen to.…

Commercials are advertisements. Companies advertise in order to sell their product. An example of one of those products is Ritalin. Why are 11 million children prescribed Ritalin every year? “Another way we as adults justify our excessive fears and brutal policies toward the nation’s children is by shifting the blame to nature. We convince ourselves that millions of children are born defective. Children whom adults find frightening and difficult to control are said to suffer from various psychological or biomedical disorders”(Glassner 77). These commercials describe “symptoms” such as trouble focusing or high energy. A lot of kids have trouble focusing, or have lots of energy. Kids who have high energy levels are often diagnosed with ADD and prescribed Ritalin to calm them down because the parents are convinced that something is wrong with them. Instead of finding some outlet for their energy, they just remove the energy with drugs. Sure, some children do need some help, but I refuse to believe that 11 million children in this country are defective. “At what cost do we choose to view hyperactive children as neurologically and chemically damaged?”(Glassner 77).…

One of the main reasons that some advertisements are considered controversial would be because television viewers want to watch interesting entertainment. Advertisers realize that the catchy ads are more likely to be remembered longer; therefore, these ads have more luck with higher sales. Controversial advertisements can be very beneficial. The benefits of such advertisements include but are not limited to, educational advertising. The commercial is described in which a man gets up out of bed as a kind gesture to his pregnant wife; he goes to go get her ice cream from the refrigerator. There is not any, so he decides to go the store to get her some. As he pulls out of the driveway in his car, his car is hit in a head-on collision. The commercial states "Didn 't see that one coming, nobody ever does, buckle up" (CNN news, 1999, what the spots show, ¶ 1). This type of…

The variety of different shows becomes somewhat of a narcotic (280, 1, 1). People constantly have a guide through the many wonders of this world in 30 minute to one hour programs. People hold the inability to focus on an actual tour in this generation, so they resolve to go to cartoons and whatnot to take a subconscious tour of the world. People watch things such as American Dad, where the main character works for the CIA; the main character takes you on an un-educational tour throughout his world. We have about ten minutes of the program, and then we receive a break so our tiny attention spans can recover during commercials. We don’t concentrate because programs give us no reason to do so. Commercials crave your attention with small details, but they don’t need to keep it for very long. Commercials are short, colorful, and made for simple minded creatures; they don’t provoke your thoughts. The HP commercial that plays “Too Close” by Alex Clare provides a fine example. Techno music gives the commercial a catchy tune and the flashing colorful pictures makes people not think, just want to buy. The makers of the commercials add an appeal, whether it’s sexual appeal or the bandwagon effect. People don’t face a challenge in any way with commercials when it comes to focus. Television has become a mindless habit. If one were to observe a child watching television, they could see the child’s blank expression and distant stare. Their minds constantly switch gears to match the program’s constant change of action. One sees this very often in children, especially as a babysitter. Working with children provides the ability to observe…
