Lord of the Rings Book Report
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by J. R. R. Tolkien, later fitted as a trilogy. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier fantasy book The Hobbit and soon developed into a much larger story. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, with much of it being written during World War II. It was originally published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955, and has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into at least 38 different languages, becoming one of the most popular works in twentieth-century literature.

J.R.R. Tolkien
While John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is known for his contribution to British literature and his reliance upon old Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon literature, the author was not born in Europe but in Africa. In 1892, Tolkien was born in the South African town of Bloemfontein, in an area known as the Orange Free State. His father, Arthur Tolkien, had left England in order to take up a senior position with a bank in the colony. When J.R.R. Tolkien was almost three years old, he returned to England with his mother and his younger brother.
After Arthur's death from rheumatic fever, the family made their home at Sarehole, near Birmingham. This beautiful rural area made a great impression on the young Ronald, and its effect can be seen in his later writings and his pictures. Mabel died in 1904, leaving the boys to the care of Father Francis Morgan, a priest at the Birmingham Oratory. At King Edward's School, Ronald was taught Classics, Anglo-Saxon and Middle-English. He had great linguistic talent, and after studying old Welsh and Finnish, he started to invent his own "Elvish" languages.
1914 saw the outbreak of the First World War. Ronald was in his final year at Exeter College, Oxford: he graduated the following year with a First in English Language and Literature and at once took up his commission as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers.

There are many movies based on books, that scenes were either altered slightly or changed completely. Movie directors often change scenes from the novel in order to make the final production more interesting, to create a story they perceived from the novel, or to compensate from leaving a particular important scene out. In which director Peter Jackson, undertook when producing the movie, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, on a particular scene of the novel, chapter seven in J.R. Tolkien’s, The Hobbit. The only thing on it was the sentence “In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit.” Of course, Tolkien took it upon himself to create an entire story around this “hobbit.” He felt as though he had to find out what exactly it was and ended up creating a world-famous series complete with maps and languages completely made up from the mind of the man himself. Finally, in 1937, the book was published under a simple title: The Hobbit. This book was a major success, and is recognized globally to this day (Doughan). Tolkien’s publisher, Stanley Unwin, was surprised by the major success of this book, and wanted to see a sequel that was equally successful. Thus, Tolkien started on The Lord of the Rings, which took more than a decade to complete the 12-book series because of Tolkien’s his strive for…

    1. Thesis Statement: Within the pages of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien there is courage, adventure, and a great change of character in Mr. Bilbo Baggins. The Hobbit starts off with the description of what sort of creatures’ hobbits are and the introduction of Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is just like any other regular hobbit; he enjoys food, doesn’t like adventure, and right at the beginning says, “We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner. I don’t see what anyone sees in them (page 6).” This he says to Gandalf the Grey who’s a wizard and returns to Hobbiton after many years on a search for someone who is willing to go on an adventure. Right off the bat Bilbo tells Gandalf absolutely not, he is not looking for an adventure, but Gandalf must of mistook his answer for consent to going on an adventure because before Bilbo knows it he’s off with a group of 13 dwarves on a quest to regain the dwarf Thorin’s homeland from the evil dragon Smaug. I think the moment when Bilbo really begins his change of character is when they were all meeting before they went off on their quest and the dwarves thought he couldn’t hear them, and they started talking about how Bilbo seemed much to small, timid, and weak to be any good at burglaring. When they said those things Bilbo’s Took side of the family won out and he began to find himself thinking, “…He would go without bed and breakfast to be thought fierce. As for little fellow bobbing on the mat it also made him really fierce (page 18)…” This part in the story is when I believe Bilbo began to have sparks of thoughts that maybe he really did want to go on an adventure.…

The hobbit is an adventurous mythical plot depicted from all these various events held on a wide false belief and ideas through out the whole novel different from a fairy or folk tale. In the novel THE HOBBIT by J.R.R. Tolkien is based on a story of a hobbit caught in the adventure to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug. This story is a based on a mythical plot, where Bilbo Baggins-a hobbit was caught up in plot joining the dwarfs and Gandalf on their adventure to get the treasure that is protected by a dangerous dragon fighting many obstacles along their journey. This is very unexpected from Bilbo Baggins because as hobbit they are respected for their simple, punctual, and boring lifestyle.
