Abigail accused Elizabeth of being a witch even though Elizabeth was not a witch and Abigail knew it. This is why she lives because she accuses everyone so no one would accuse her.
John was a good man because he wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone else on purpose and he is a very respectable man in the town. He did what a good man would do. He died because all the other people who died knew no one was a witch and was not going to ruin anyone else’s life for their own personal gain so he died for other people’s names and so they didn’t die a lair.
Danforth was a terrible person because he wanted to keep his power to a terrible expense. Danforth was a terrible man because when a lot of people were hung under his sentence and died. She truly believed that the women she accused of witchcraft were trying to come after her. A sane and mentally healthy person would recognize when it is time to “drop the act” after over a dozen innocent lives have been taken. Abigail was so mentally driven by what she thought was right, she couldn't see the wrong in it. Abigail was so stubborn about what she wanted, which was John. She was manipulated and “abused” by John, she was willing to sacrifice other people’s lives to save herself from everyone and John’s individual reputation.…

In Act 2 Elizabeth is arguing with Proctor and confesses some concerns she has about Abigail. “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote on it now—and I am sure she does—and thinks to kill me then to take my place” (Miller Act 2). Here Elizabeth is warily expressing what she fears Abigail stands to gain by implicating her as witch since she’s realized that Abigail is desperate to get what she wants by any means possible. Abigail is well aware of the amount of sway she holds the trials and aspires to put it in good use. This sense of power overtakes her and makes her want for more, whether that is through accusing more people—just because she can—or removing Elizabeth. But Abigail reasons that once she has removed Abigail from the equation she’s essentially won and gained the highest power of all, being by Proctor’s side. This intense focus on Proctor only serves to push him even further away and pushes her closer to the downfall of losing him and herself in the…

She is so selfish she yells at people, threatens to beat people up, and wishes death upon them if she doesn’t get her way. In the beginning of the play all the girls should have told everyone what really happened when they were dancing in the forest. If that had happened none of the girls would have started to accuse any one of witchcraft. But since Abigail is so selfish she ruins an entire town by threatening people her friends so her reputation and her name do not get ruined. Abigail tells all of her friends “If anyone spreads the word about us doing witchcraft, I will come to your house and kill you.” I would not want that kind of friend if she threatens to kill me. Also Betty went into a coma so Abigail was trying to wake her up. Abby started threatening Betty that she would beat her up if she didn’t wake up. All of sudden Betty gets up and screams out a window that Abby drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor! She also threatens Marry Warren to not tell anyone that she was in the forest with him or her. If she was bewitched, why would it be happening in court? The accused obviously would not want to prove her guilt in front of a judge with an edgy finger for signing death certificates. Also, Abigail lied to get some backing on her accusations by accusing two of the worst ladies in town of witches, as well as a black slave from Barbados. This was very believable, as these women held no social rank among the town. This has been a common way throughout history to get support for individuals and groups. The Nazi party in Germany accused Jews of all their economic woes. It gained backing among the party as they looked for blame, and Nazis gained from it power. Abigail is a skillful liar and a quality enemy. Abigail purposely hurt herself for evidence in court. "I have been hurt…I have seen my blood runnin' out! I have been near to murdered everyday because I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people." (Abigail 108) She was very good about pinning guilt on others and the fact that she was the victim. She had a way with convincing both the judge and…

    Crucible - Summary

We are warned about Abigail before she even utters a word, Miller gives us a quick overview of her personality ‘Abigail seventeen enters- a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling.’ We see that before we even get to know Abigail we are told that she is very good a telling lies. But at the start Abigail does try to start off telling the truth when she does tell her uncle about the dancing and she pleads with him that young Betty is not witched. However, we do see the dark side of Abigail, when she is talking to all the girls saying that they only danced and Tituba conjured spirits not them and if they told Abigail would ‘come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!’ We can see the extremes Abigail would go to keep this a secret. We know that Abigail is just plain bad, there isn’t a lot of good in her at all. Also we see that Abigail perhaps because she is raised as an unloved orphan, she loves to be the centre of attention when she can be. So when Tituba was confessing to Reverend Hale about conjuring spirits. Abigail noticed she wasn’t getting any attention so she confessed to witchcraft just to get some praise off of the back of Tituba. To get even more praise and to become even more absolved she starts naming random names. Abigail with or without realising it starts something, that she may think she can control, but as the lies gather momentum and as the crucible burns hotter, she cannot and she has completely gone too far with the lying and cannot turn back. Abigail Williams' lies and deceit is done to maintain her sense of control over the group and to ensure that what she covets or desires is what will be gained. In Act II, the focus is the realm of the internal. The effect of…

In Act IV John Proctor is in court on the charges of being a witch. This shows that John Proctor will stand up for his friends and tell the truth about not being associated with the Devil, rather than lie and have his friends die. If John Proctor was not a man who stood up to his friends than he would lied and have all his friends die; instead he told the truth and died, while maintaining honor with his friends. This shows that John Proctor stands up for his friends because he will show people in the court that people being accused of witchcraft are being wrongfully accused; giving them a chance at surviving and not being hanged. If John Proctor wasn’t a good friend then he wouldn’t even try to help the women. In The Crucible John Proctor is portrayed as a man who stands up for his…

John was a hero, because he wanted to save the lives of all the innocent people who were going to hang. He was an honest man that made a mistake. In act four John transforms into a man who has nothing left but his dignity. His soul has been blackened, and he cannot confess to such a crime that he did not commit, even if it would’ve saved his life. Because I lie and sign myself to lies...” (Act four, pg.145). Proctor’s self-worth was being challenged, and he wanted to keep his last shred of dignity, before he was a completely destroyed man.…
