Poems are written in many languages, in many different ways and are read throughout the world. Two poems that will be compared are "The Toys" by Coventry Patmore and "Little Boy Blue" by Eugene Field. The poem "The Toys" is better than "Little Boy Blue" because it uses more effective types of figurative languages, the theme is more universal, and the tone is more serious. The poem "The Toys" uses more effective types of figurative languages than "Little Boy Blue". One of the more effective types of figurative languages is allusions. "The Toys" uses biblical allusion in the poem, which is effective because everyone can relate to the bible, which makes it an effective figurative language. For example "Having my law the seventh time disobeyed"

Figurative language allows readers to better understand the message that the author is trying to say. Personification allows writers to easily reveal what they are trying to say when descriptions fail them. By including personification, the author can clearly communicate how he felt at a specific time. As a reader, personification allows us to easier relate to the idea or feeling the author is conveying. Wiesel uses personification on page thirty nine, when he says “Remorse began to gnaw at me.” Remorse cannot eat away at a person, but it allows the reader to understand how guilty Elie felt when he did not stand up for his father. A second example of figurative language used in Night is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing allows the author to keep…

Amy Tan allows us to deepen our understanding of her world by finding every day items and ideas that Americans can relate to such as a mother’s desire to do the best for their children, or using meals to represent a nurturing love, or a vase to represent a rocky foundation, or the pain that comes from hiding your true self. The use of figurative language in this novel removes the barriers from both the Chinese and the American cultures and customs therefore allowing us to examine each other not through the eyes of a specific race but through the eyes of one race, the human race.…

Mary Lascelles, a famous literary scholar once said “I suspect that Jane Austen’s practice of denying the aid of figurative language which, as much as any other habits of expression, repelled Charlotte Brontë, and has alienated other readers, conscious with a dissatisfaction with her style that they have not cared to analyze.” Therefore, when an author doesn’t use figurative language, they can alienate their readers and not describe characters, moods, or other objects nearly as well. This would lead to unhappy readers and not an effective book that would not sell a substantial amount of copies. In the stories “The lemon Tree Billiards House” by Cedric Yamanaka and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Myers, both popular short stories, the…

These two poems both use striking language. Firstly, they both use onomatopoeia to convey the setting of the poems. In “Half-past Two”, the onomatopoeia is used to convey the ticking sound of the clock, whereas in “Piano”, it is used to convey the musical sounds of the piano.…

A metaphor is a comparison made without using the words like or as. In this example from the Cuban Poet José Martí’s “Simple Verses,” the comparison is between the sound of the wind and a song. He is saying that the wind in the trees reminds him of a beautiful song; the most beautiful. Nature is the pioneer musician, creating and inspiring ourselves.…

Most poets use some form of figurative language to convey messages in their poetry because it allows the reader to attach a relatable visual to the emotion. As a result, nature, with its immense web of symbolism and mystery, is often encrypted into poetry. Poetry readers are often confused by a poets reference to nature such as trees, flowers, moons, etc., by assuming that any connection to the beauties of nature implies a positive connotation; however, it can be argued that nature's attributes are mostly associated with negative references such as liminal space, phallic symbols, and death. Both Sylvia Plath in "The Night Dances" and Seamus Heaney in "Ocean's Love to Ireland" use nature to create clear imagery in their poems in a manner that…

Even by the names of each poem, we can anticipate that they will have subject matter, regarding a child, but stark contrasts in style and structure. To begin with, I can say that “Infant Joy” has a very simple structure and style, emphasizing on the theme of happiness and freedom, while “Infant Sorrow” has a more complex and dissonant style, using language, which reflects the opposite theme of struggle and discomfort. However, I feel that the main theme of both the poems is individualism.…
