Momma runs a store and Maya learns many lessons while living there. It is while she is living with her grandparents, that Maya starts to love Shakespeare. This is the beginning of Maya’s life-long passion for literature.
Eventually Maya experiences the feeling of finally belonging when she moves to San Francisco and she also begins to find herself and is learning to love herself. As readers, we are able to see how Maya grows from the insecure little girl in Arkansas to the strong woman who realizes that she can trust herself and will be able to keep moving forward, which is clearly shown when she realizes that she can take care of her son herself.
It is not easy for me relate to the upbringing of Maya. I have endured some of the normal situations where I feel like things are not fair, but I have never had to be afraid to speak to someone because of their skin color. It is easy for me to relate to the part of her life where she is displaced a lot. My parents also divorced and I have moved a lot

Like once said by Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Throughout the story Graduation Day you could really tell that this quote applied to Maya Angelou in a huge way. The story is based around the eighth grade graduation of Maya Angelou. Her main point reflects the unfair treatment of african americans during that time because they were not valued for their educational intelligence. She does an amazing job telling the story by changing her tone and feelings as time advances and it gets closer to the time of actual graduation. Although society constantly derailed the true potential of african americans during this time, Maya Angelou never let it influence the person she knew she was.…

Her autobiography starts in the small town of Stamps Arkansas. Maya recalls her youthful escapades with her brother Bailey in their Grandmother’s store. Their Grandmother was a harsh woman, who scrubbed them clean every Sunday (much to the children’s dismay). She recounts her first fearful encounters with racism and sex. Later, Maya moves to California with her beautiful mother. Her mother is a graceful dancer who likes to say that she, “Hopes for the best, prepares for the worst, and is unsurprised by anything in between.” It is by her Mother’s boyfriend that Maya is sexually abused and raped. Although she tells the story in an unattached fashion, it is clear that the incident affected her entire life. She returns to her Grandmother’s home for a few years and begins to develop into an avid reader. For a summer, Maya lives with her father and his spiteful girlfriend. She moves out into a junkyard and becomes a free-dancing, confident girl. From the Junkyard on, Maya is sure of herself in a way that she never was before. The book ends in Maya’s pregnancy. She gives birth at just sixteen years of age. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is primarily a coming of age story. Through the book, Maya finds herself and develops into the poetic thinker and writer we know of…

Maya confronts the insidious effects of racism and segregation in America at a very young age. She internalizes the idea that blond hair is beautiful and that she is a fat black girl trapped in a nightmare. Stamps, Arkansas, is so thoroughly segregated that as a child Maya does not quite believe that white people exist. As Maya gets older, she is confronted by more overt and personal incidents of racism, such as a white speaker’s condescending address at her eighth-grade graduation, her white boss’s insistence on calling her Mary, and a white dentist’s refusal to treat her. The importance of Joe Louis’s world championship boxing match to the black community reveals the dearth of publicly recognized African American heroes. It also demonstrates the desperate nature of the black community’s hope for vindication through the athletic triumph of one man. These unjust social realities confine and demean Maya and her relatives. She comes to learn how the pressures of living in a thoroughly racist society have profoundly shaped the character of her family members, and she strives to surmount them.…

Characterization is a physical description of a character, the way the character acts and the personality traits of the character. Bailey Johnson Jr. is the older brother of Marguerite Ann Johnson, the protagonist of the novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. In order for Maya to become independent, she needs to separate from Bailey. Their original relationship was holding her back. Bailey is described in the book as a bright, clever and light-spirited person. Maya needs to separate from Bailey because she relies on him to fight her battles. He is also a “God-like” figure to her, which is an unhealthy obsession. Bailey also keeps Maya from believing in herself because Maya puts too much faith in him.…

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou is an autobiography detailing evens in her life from when she was just five years old to when she has her first child at the age of 16. As I read the novel, I felt as though Angelou wrote it so that she could shine a light on the racism in America. Even though Maya Angelou is “black” and I am “yellow,” I was able to relate to her story on a very personal level. Although I have never been sexually molested as she had been at the age of 8, nor have I ever been pregnant at the age of 16, her coming of age story and the contrast between her closest friend and herself drew me and I was able to relate.…

Maya Angelou creates excellent word choice throughout her book. She knows how to show instead of tell, and when to provide detail, so that the reader gets a sense of what is happening, without being disinterested by unnecessary detail. One small detail that stood out to me in these first chapters was the use of the words momma and mother. When she is talking about her grandmother she uses the word momma, which seems more endearing and fond. Whereas the usage of mother, when talking about her mother has a stern and very formal connotation. From this particular word choice, the reader can spot the difference in affection that Maya has towards her grandmother and mother throughout her childhood.…

Throughout history, racism has been effecting our society continuously. My essay will mainly focus on the issues raised by our society and how these issues were resolved. For instance, Maya Angelou’s poem, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings written in the 1960’s is a prominent depiction of how African-Americans were able to overcome racism through perseverance. To further expand my understanding towards racism, I have also chosen the film American History X set in contemporary American society, these two literature effectively reminds us that not only is racism still relevant after many years, but is sadly a perpetual problem in society.…

She followed the advice of her grandmother and did not retaliate no matter how much the desire compelled her. She made a choice but no without the guilt of having her grandmother humiliated. As a result of this choice, her family was not attacked by the white folks and was only mildly humiliated. If she had chosen the other side, she and her family may have been killed due to the high tensions between the whites and the colored. However, due to her choice, Maya Angelou realizes the true harshness of the social tension that exist in her community. Before this incident and choice, Maya just assumed the “powhitetrash” were impudent to all people due to that lack of well upbringing. After she this incident, however, Maya realizes that the girls were harassing her due to her skin color. She realizes the strong social problems and harshness based on color within her community. This fear of the white folks based on segregation, among other fears, led Maya Angelou, just as it did with many people of all time periods, to choose the peaceful path, the one that preserves life, though it may be subconscious, in overcoming…

She too is a rebellious, non-conformist woman, disgusted by and trying to liberate herself from the patriarchal norms. A new woman she too is seething in discontentment with her being enclosed within the “four walls” of her house with the expected behavior of an ideal “mother” and “wife”. In protest she curves a niche of her own, escapes to her desired island of “MANORI” in search of an “independent female” status separated from the “male” liberated from patriarchal bondage, wanting to be a woman as an independent existential being. She is incommensurate in the house of her husband but that is not to say that she is financially challenged of is mal treated. But the feminist woman in her makes her dismissive of her status. When she was heavily pregnant by her fifth child, she was unhappy, apprehensive at the thought of losing its innocence in this world where nothing except “food, sex and money matters” Her escaping to “Manori” is identical to Maya’s garden. Maya’s hankering for her father’s garden and Sita’s return to the island are important significant gestures, not hysteric reactions of mad women but attempts to let out their pent-up frustration, to restore their selves. With this fear firmly seated in her mind, she turns towards discovering an escape route in the island, to confer in her a kind of…
