MAGNIFICENCE by Estrella Alfon

SUMMARY A man who is thought to be gentle and kind comes to the house of the two children to tutor them with their schoolwork. His name is Vicente. He is a conductor. He remarks to the mother of the two children to become their private teacher when he sees them looking so smart listening to the meeting of the neighborhood association in which the mother is the president. The two children like Vicente so much for his generosity. Their parents trust him because they think he is gentle and kind. They fear nothing when he is around. One evening, Vicente comes earlier than usual. The kids immediately go to him and very excited to tell him about the pencils he gave them. As they go along with the tutorial, Vicente asks Oscar, the young boy to get him a glass of water. When Vicente is alone with the young innocent girl, he makes her trust him and then he hold her up to sit on his lap. The young girl starts to feel uncomfortable. She then twists her body to take a look at the man's face. It is sweaty and looks strange. The young girl jumps away from the man. The mother comes in holding in her hand a glass of sarsaparilla. She then throws him out of the house with multiple slaps. The mother takes the young girl a bath. She puts the clothes into the garbage and then she asks her daughter to throw the pencils away. She then puts her to sleep.

THEME The story "Magnificence" conveys two things; trust and motherhood. It shows that it takes nothing to trust anyone, but being careless of giving trust can bring harm. The story also suggests that even the calmest mother can turn into a monster when her child is abused.

IRONY At the beginning of the story, Vicente was described as gentle and kind. He was admired by the kids for his thoughtfulness and generosity. It was also said that the family has nothing to fear when he is around. Vicente was described as a good person but he was

Esteban’s narration is biased and unreliable, but through the use of Clara’s notebooks we see the other side to Esteban’s time at Tres Marías as the patrón. When Esteban recalls his leadership at Tres Marías he says, “no ones going to convince me that I wasn’t a good patrón”(51) and that he has “been a good patron; there’s no doubt about it”(54). Shortly after, we hear from Clara’s notebooks of how “[n]ot a girl passed from puberty to adulthood that [Esteban] did not subject to the woods, the riverbank, or the wrought-iron bed”(63). If the reader only heard Esteban’s narration, the reader would have only seen that he “rebuilt chicken coops and stables”, “rescued the oil fields”, and planned “an irrigation system so the crops wouldn’t have to depend on the weather”(53). During his narration the reader sees all the positive things that he did, but with Clara’s notebooks the reader also sees the negative aspects of his time at Tres Marías. Along with seeing different events that occurred with multiple narrations we also see the feelings of multiple characters. When Clara first arrives at Tres Marias “she feels that she has finally discovered her mission in life”(105). While the reader understands her motivation, Esteban is unaware that she has this drive to fulfill her mission in life. Esteban thinks she is just “charitable and generous” and wants to make “those around her happy-except [Esteban]”(178). Due to the telling of two narratives in the history of the Trueba family we are able to see the relationship dynamics from both sides, and as a result, understand the Trueba family history…

He was a jokester of his posse, a group of four Hispanic boys; Raul often failed his courses because his friends counted on him for entertainment during class and encouraged him to act the fool. Now, by accepting their encouragement and succeeding on his own, without their support, he had become a stranger. They taunted him and tried to distract him during class. When the other boys realized that raul was not going to be intimidated, they gave up and halfheartedly joined him. He only ate beans everyday, because his family didn’t have much money; also there was pressure from his father to get a full-time job so that he could contribute to the family’s meager income. He was stabled by Alberto Mendoza who jealoused at him about the academy awards. I think he can overcome these obstacles because he had the confidence and potential. I felt I been faced some of the similar obstacles in reaching my own academic goals.…

Again this related pretty directly to the sudden murder of her diplomat uncle in Chile. The death of Allende’s uncle was extremely sudden and nobody saw it coming. In the same way, the death of Maria’s son was quite unforeseen as well. Although he was never specifically named in the story, Maria’s son was really special to her, and his blonde hair was extremely significant. In literature, blonde hair often signifies purity, joy, happiness, hope, and optimism. When her son was born, Maria exemplified all of these qualities. Her son was one of the only elements of her life that was important to he, and their future was looking very bright. However, one day “the ship lurched and the heavy metal-edged lid slammed shut, breaking the child’s neck” (Allende 157). Maria’s son, along with all of her hope and optimism, disappeared just as suddenly as Allende’s uncle. Allende’s uncle, who was the president, helped provide for her family and protect them because of his position of power. When he was assassinated, many of the positive aspects of Allende’s life quickly vanished, just like when Maria’s son died. Another association between Maria and Allende is made when talking about the death of children because, like Maria, Allende’s child died early in…

Rodriguez faces a few tensions in his personal experience such as being a "scholarship boy" as oppose to a well rounded student and and his life at home compared to a more friendly home environment. Rodriguez says that "I was a very good student, I was a also a very bad student. I was a scholarship boy, a certain kind of scholarship boy. Always successful, I was always unconfident. Exhilarated by my progress. Sad. I became the prized student - anxious and eager to learn. Too eager, too anxious - an imitative and unoriginal pupil." ( Rodrigues #283 ) Rodriguez describes himself here as imitating his teachers too much and being a perfect student instead of thinking for himself and taking in the knowledge he is given by his teachers and analyzing it and putting it to use. He is unoriginal and and uninteresting compared to a student who can use their knowledge in their own way and gets more involved. The other tension Rodriguez faces his the tension he has with his family, mostly his mother and father. At home his mother and father both support and encourage what he is doing very much but they didn't like the fact that he would always be in his room and the fact that the only thing he was involved with was school. "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education." (Rodriguez #286) This quote shows that Rodriguez's amount of knowledge of the english language and other subjects he had compared to his parents and therefore he was somewhat embarrassed by them and it created a tough home environment to live in because he didn't communicate much with his parents. This contrasts the home environment where their is a strong relationship between the family and their is communication.…

    The Censors

The story is an example of situational irony because an event occurs that changes the expectations of the story. For example, Juan went from trying to outsmart the government by working for them to becoming a dedicated censor. Juan becomes so obsessed with trying to be a perfect censor that he forgets the true mission of making sure he gets his letter back. To get the letter back Juan does work long and hard but “Soon his work became so absorbing that his noble mission blurred in his mind”. In addition, Juan loses any rational thought of why he actually got the job at the censorship place and ends up censoring his letter. He works so hard that they keep advancing him to higher positions, and is soon revealed that it is more important for him to do his job than to try and find his letter. “He was about to congratulate himself for having finally discovered his true mission when his letter reached his hands. Naturally he censored it without regret.” Furthermore, Juan’s actions lead to the biggest surprise of all. His own death. He is too far-gone and does not think twice when he puts letter into the censored pile. Because of this action, Juan is killed the next day “And just as naturally he couldn't prevent them from executing him at dawn, one more victim of his devotion to work”. As a result, to all of Juan’s actions, “The Censors” is a great example of situational…

Allende states that “his courage might have failed him… I’m not going to fall into his trap like an idiot.” (Allende 515) This statement clearly demonstrates how Vidal’s ego took over him and prefer to protect himself instead of risking everything to save his mother. Allende also portrays how poor decisions made can destroy third party people. Allende adds the statement that exemplifies how Vidal’s mother is the victim of his son’s ego. Allende states “His laughter turned sour the next day, when he heard that Juana the Forlorn had hanged herself…over-whelmed by the shame of her only son leaving her to fester in a cage…” (Allende 516) Allende also portrays how the stubbornness of the judge leads to the danger of him and his family. Allende states “… the stress of his race to save his family, Judge Hidalgo’s heart gave a massive jolt…” (Allende 516) Allende makes the reader understand that the stubborn decisions of Judge Hidalgo not only ended up killing him but lead to the immediate danger of his wife and…
