In the world today things have majorly and severely changed. On the one hand we no longer have slavery, but on the other there is another type of slavery going on in cooperate businesses. In these two essays I chose and plan to tell you about the oppression in “Caged Bird” (Angelou, M.) and the oppression in “Life Under the Chief Doublespeak officer” (Lutz, W.) which he shows with the firing of people. Oppression whether by a slaves masters or by the leaders of major corporations,

His quote states: “How do I fire thee? Let me count the ways”. (This quote made me laugh so hard!). “One company denied it was laying off 500 people at its headquarters. “We don’t characterize it as a layoff,” said the corporate doublespeak (sometimes called a spin doctor). “We’re managing our staff resources. You’ve just been managed down, you staff resource you.” “Life Under the Chief Doublespeak officer” (Lutz, W. pg2, para 11.) See what I mean about the oppression in these …show more content…
What she is speaking of is a slave, trapped in his master’s cage, meaning forced labor. The slave is so enraged but his hands are tied, he is forced to do as his master commands. When the caged bird (the slave) is singing, he is singing the songs of slavery. For example, “Hard Trails” and some of the lyrics are “Now ain’t them hard trails, great tribulations, Hard trials, hard trials, I am bound to leave this land.” Most of these songs were about the Lord saving them. The paraphrase I chose is from “Life Under the Chief Doublespeak Officer” Lutz, W., (pg 1, Para 8)“No one gets fired these days, and no one gets laid off. If you are high enough in the corporate pecking order, you “resign for personal reasons.” (And then you’re never unemployed; you’re just in an “orderly transition between career changes.”)” In my opinion both of these essays have so much in common with each other. (Lutz, W.) makes me feel that the corporate world is becoming nothing but slavery now. Whereas, (Angelou, M.) is

William Lutz’s essay, “Life Under the Chief Doublespeak Officer”, describes what a doublespeak is all about and how companies and businesses in America use doublespeak to change the meaning of something or how it can misrepresent the real meaning of words. It is a language that has no real meaning or has more than one meaning and is intended to hide the truth. In the first sentence of the essay, the author reveals that doublespeak is a language that pretends to say something and is misleading. In paragraph six, the author gave examples like how a travel agent may now be called a “travel…

The effect of mismanaged LAYOFFs on the remaining workforce and the effects, lack of management preparation, the human condition, and lack of mitigation strategies. We think that the problem with this article is that not enough managers or HR personal, know how to let a person go from their employment effectively. They sometimes don't realize the impact that it has on the other employees morals. Also, that sometimes companies don't take a closer look to make sure downsizing will be the answer to cutting costs like they think that it will. Every HR or manager should be let go in their lifetime so that they know what it feels like. I believe that this statement holds tremendous merit because the best lessons in life are learned through personal experience. In order to adequately communicate life changing messages of sorts, it should be done by a seasoned manager. I will be very surprised if any company has a potential layoff learning path that will coach and train the management staff for these kinds of things. It is imperative to be sensitive to the individual being laid off as this will impact their livelihood significantly. I do agree that other options much is explored such as relocating or wage cuts before making the decision to lay off people.…

In consideration of the slaves, being a slave trader can be a tough job. If I was a slave trader, I would feel emotionless towards my slaves. The slaves are put through dreadful conditions. Thus, separating them from loved ones and making their lives miserable. Despite the fact that they are innocent and desperate for freedom, as a slave trader, I could heedless about their point of view. We hear and read doublespeak every day, but what, exactly, is doublespeak? Webster's dictionary defines doublespeak with these words: evasive, ambiguous, pretentious language intended to deceive or confuse. In his essay "The World of Doublespeak", William Lutz notes that doublespeak is not an accident or a "slip of the tongue". Instead, it is a deliberate, calculated misuse of language. Nearly everyone uses it and we see it everywhere. As long as we know it is out there, it can't affect us, right? Wrong! Doublespeak corrupts thought, destroys communication, and erodes trust.…

Does anyone have a hard time choosing what career or job which they really want to do in the future? I personally have two jobs that I am considering right now: actuary and physical therapist. Actuaries basically manage risk. They help organizations plan for the future and protect themselves from loss. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent permanent physical disabilities in their patients. The reason why I am choosing between these two jobs is very much related to my past experience. Since my youth, I was influenced by my elder sister who is very good in mathematics. Due to her influence, I have a big interest in mathematics. I wish my future job will be related to mathematics, which is why I considered becoming an actuary. In addition, I love to watch dramas that are related to medical education. In fact, I just finished watching a Hong Kong drama named ‘On Call 36 Hours’. It is a medical drama. After watching that drama, I have the desire to help those injured patients to recover from pains and injuries. Although many might think these two jobs are very different, they have very much in common.…

The issue of Slavery, though believed by some to be no longer evident, is still, unfortunately, a huge industry throughout the entire world. A few include, sweatshops, sex trades, and even drug cartels. All these plague society, of the, “modern world.” Even though, many years ago, we claimed to have, “abolished,” slavery, the true reality, is that we only ended it in one aspect, in one place. We don't truly look at what still exists. We turn our back to the real issues, to simply pretend that they don't exist.…

The bird is a sign of cheerfulness in a bleary home. Mrs Hale states, "He didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him--." She stopped, shivered a little. "Like a raw wind that gets to the bone." Mr. Wright strangles the bird, once again neglecting his wife, trapping his wife in a bleary place, and being cruel and abusive.…

Double speak is seen a lot in my daily life. For example, I sometimes irritate my sister, and she tells me it is fine but has clear symbols showing that it is not fine. She shows me this by her tone of voice and her body language. Sometimes when she asks me to take out the trash and I don’t she will tell me its fine and do it herself, showing me in her tone and body language that it is not fine. I also see double speak when I am with my girlfriend, especially if I am trying to figure out what she wants. She can tell me one thing but completely mean another. Another example of double speak could be when my girlfriend and I are trying to decide somewhere…

    Dehumanizing Slaves

Frederick Douglass’s, The Narrative of Frederick Douglass an American Slave, Written by Himself and Solomon Northup’s The Twelve Years of Slave give insight on the purpose and the process of the dehumanizing of slaves. To dehumanize a person is to eliminate the human qualities through manipulation, torture and human cruelty. Douglass and Northup utilize their personal experiences as enslaves to depict the representation of slavery and how the masters overthrow the enslaved by torture, beatings and even killings. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the dehumanization institution of slavery uses violence, power, and identity theft to strip the identity of slaves, compel them to animal like characteristics, and repudiate them of any education.…
