Letter To A Basketball Player
Dylan,

The letter you wrote was very thoughtful and meant a lot to me! Here are my thoughts!

The endless thumping of a basketball is an annoying noise to some, but a wonderful sound to me. I often heard you playing basketball but frankly was focused on other matters---mowing the lawn, cleaning the yard, or getting other stuff done. I never really noticed you, other than looking at Lulu when you took her for a walk! She had a cute face and I’ve always wanted a dog.

With a hectic work schedule and a focus on my family and close friends, I never reached out to any neighbors, other than Mrs. Aebker who was a good friend and running companion.

When I saw that your basketball hoop was broken, I felt badly for you and invited you to use

I appreciated your many positive comments about your family, and I liked the fact that you valued what you had rather than whined about what you didn’t. You were courteous, positive and had a funny sense of humor. After a difficult day at work, I enjoyed just hanging around with you, shooting hoops, and really getting to know you.

You seemed very bright, thoughtful, and rather mature for your age. I was amazed at your basketball knowledge, even if you didn’t know that my Boston Celtics were the most successful basketball team in the history of the universe!

As we played basketball more frequently and both got to know each other, I realized that you weren’t a bother who was distracting me from my work, but rather a genuinely kind, incredibly interesting, and very engaging young man. I enjoyed talking with you and valued our growing friendship.

I’m not sure where your passion for basketball will take you, but your many other outstanding qualities will undoubtedly make you a successful person regardless of what you decide to do. It’s been fun and very rewarding getting to know you, and I’m looking forward to staying in touch as your life’s adventures continue! You’re a very good basketball player, but more importantly an even better

First of all, you were probably the funniest/most entertaining teacher I have ever had throughout my elementary and secondary education. I thoroughly enjoyed coming to your class. Your letter was a very warm welcoming letter, the best part of the letter was how you said the direct supervisor was welcomed to meet you during the meeting you were going to have. The only thing I didn’t see and thought I would have seen was contact information. Only because you wrote if you were available and not actually stating a time or date. But that is only my opinion and it’s not necessarily needed.…

Growing up with a dad who was All-State for Basketball, and a Grandfather who played Division I basketball; I was always expected to be good at ball. I was always decent but never quite lived to expectations. When I turned 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 3 scoliosis, which limited not only my quickness but my ability to twist and run normally. The basketball dynasty was coming to an end as I had lost a lot of athleticism. I was always on the middle team, not very good, not very bad, but I always tried new moves; which made me hard to guard. I finally quit all sports because my back couldn’t handle the stress, and I wasn’t prepared to go into surgery. One day as I was watching…

The image of you is still painted in my mind like a canvas painting hung in an art gallery. You bought so much joy to me that day and I will always remember you because of this. Not to mention that you always lived up to your promise of coming to see me, no matter the circumstances. The sound of your voice during every visit was enough to bring a smile to my face and to cheer me up in a circumstance which this would not have been possible…

Hi, Karen! I'm thrilled to hear back from you! You couldn't have written back at a better time. To be honest, I'm a bit queasy about rereading that last message I wrote because of how all over the place it is and my cringeworthy grammar. If I were to reread this message in another five years might be weirded out just the same. I guess at some point you've got to accept your own quirkiness if you haven't already.…

I have always love to play basketball. The swish when you make it just right, and the boom of the basketball hitting the floor “are sounds I love”. When I first started playing basketball, my mom and my couch Richard knew that I was expectational. I played with Richard for a few years, then one day he told us about this newspaper ad he saw for a team named “Eugene Fire”. My mom decided to check it out, so she called the coach, Jim. He said I probably won't make the team, but I believed I could. So I would try anyways.…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…
