Latin American Stereotypes Essay
What is a stereotype? For many people they are funny and harmless. Most of them doesn't know how it feels to be stereotyped every day, when you turn on the Tv and watch how your culture, and the persons you love are being made fun of.
A stereotype is when someone uses racist commentaries against a culture or a race and calls it “harmless humor”
A stereotype can come in many different ways, with remarkable visual features like different eyes, the size of the mouth, the color of the skin or the hair. It can be with the way the talk with a somehow strong and thick accent. A big part of this is how people form a race are portrayed in TV. As a Latin American, I can assure you that we are not all the same, we all know Mexicans like spicy food, but Argentinians not. Almost everyone can speak spanish but we all have different accents. It's difficult to summarize all Latin Americans with just one stereotype. We can't identify with stereotypes because we are all different.
The thing with stereotypes is that it doesn't matter if the person identifies or no, it's not god to generalize people, and is worst if they generalize a whole country. The worst of all is that when the person is comfortable in their own race, they are made fun of, they made them believe that the way they were born is ugly, because the same feature is not in a white person. Because if a white person wears, talks, or use the same things of a person of a different race are called different and trend makers.
This happened some weeks ago. The famous shop Urban Outfitters used the navajo art and name in their clothes. The Navajo are the most famous tribe of Native Americans. But urban outfitters didn't tell the tribe that they were using their name. And the thing that gets me the most pissed of is that they didn't care to make panties with their art. Culture is not couture, skin color means nothing. We should not be judged by how we are, because in the end we are all
